So my mums 2002 1.6 astra petrol was written off last week and she's looking for a new car.

She does around 40 miles a day, most of which is motorway and she'd prefer a diesel now as the petrol was costing her £60 a week and it drank oil like there's no tomorrow!

Originally she wanted to spend £2k, but I've told her to spend a little more and get something decent, so looking around £2800 max.

I've been looking on auto trader and found a few low mileage astra 1.7dti's, but after research on here I've found they're extremely sluggish and a pain to work on. So taking that into account I started looking at the newer 1.7cdti and again researched on here and apparently they have dmf/gearbox/clutch issues???

Bit stuck now.. personally if it was me I'd probably go for the newer one.. but the DMF have started to put me off them.

Here are two examples of what I've been looking at:

Cheers guys.

To be honest if you are worried about DMF then don't buy a modern diesel, I sold My 1.3 CDTi Astra H Estate at 125000 miles and it was on original clutch and DMF.

Can't specifically help with the Astra. But my Vectra C 1.9 CDTi 150 had DMF failure at 44K miles so fixed under warranty but the clutch was chargeable, now on 109K and no issues with the DMF / clutch since they was changed.

    Touch wood!

    cheers guys.

I've been down the DMF route myself with a brand new mondeo that I had 2 years ago! it had two DMF's, three clutches and a gearbox!

I have a diesel insignia now though and not had any problems so far..

Does anyone know if the 1.7dti suffers from any simliar problems?

I think the 150 is more prone to problems judging by what's said on the Vec C forum, I've got an 08 1.9 CDTi 120 with 36k on the clock and I'm hoping I don't get stung.

Thanks, been a member over there since I bought the car, five years ago. Not had alternator or injection issues, yet!

    Again touch wood.

I had an 07 150CDti Vectra and it was a dog, only 46k on the clock and in 12 months needed a EGR sensor, coolant sensor, injector wiring and when I got shot of the crate in January it had the dreaded DMF rattle and quote were coming in at 1k +

Great car and fast but too many expensive faults. If I'd kept it it would have made me destitute.

She really wants an Astra, but are there any other simliar cars that I should tell her to consider? I mentioned Focus but she doesn't like them.

There are things like Megane's etc, but unsure what they're like for reliability etc, as that's her main priority!

Or maybe the fact the car was a factory lemon along with shoddy workmanship (as in the report).

Cheers for that helpful post though.

why not look at the diesel civic? for £2500 you might get an 04/54 plate model, it's a 1.7 diesel (it's an Isuzu engine, not a Honda engine) but it's a great car.

on the motorway I get 60mpg+
