They haven't got it though have they - we can argue the point as much as we like but OP is liable to pay the Money shop.
The fact that they have lost the cheque is irrelevant.

    lol

i own a shop. i sell you a tele. i lose the money you paid me.... des that mean i can chase you???

they lost the cheque. simple. they should not e putting demands out like that.
Promo codes are never always cheaper..... isnt that right EuropCar?

I bought a CD-ROM Drive from Amazon years ago, paid on Credit Card, arrived a few days later, all happy.

Two YEARS later I get contacted by Amazon, there was a problem taking the payment due to some "internal error during a system upgrade", please pay £70...

Why would you pay the cheque into The Money Shop. Do you not have a bank account of your own.
This normally means the recipient couldn't possibly put the cheque in the bank due to all the Payday lenders queueing up to take their money back which has been missed.

Cash it in over the counter to go on a well earnt and thoroughly well deserved holiday.. Not saying that is the case here, but is a common trend..

thats the difference! you got a nicely worded letter. OP got a demand as if its their fault.

I am willing to pay this money, I am not trying to find a way out at all.
I just wanted advice of how to deal with their demands after all its not my fault.

I only cashed the cheque because I was going to Venice for 5 days and I had just managed to clear 13k in debt so really wanted to take a well deserved holiday.

tell them to lay off. i would write a strong letter demanding an apology and some form of compensation as YOU know have to chase the IR for a replacement cheque, then having to go back to the money shop..... all in the name of the money shop mislaying the cheque.

Yes, it's very easy to lose a piece of paper when messy people are in charge, maybe it's been shredded or something. Sometimes it's bank's mistake. Checking cctv cameras of that day and maybe day after might help but I don't think it would be that easy to get the permission. These companies don't want to lose money even when it's their mistake which is just ridiculous, I would take it further.

What happens when you cash a cheque at one of these places? Are they lending you the money until the cheque has cleared or are they effectively buying it from you?

Their online T&C don't mention anything about what happens if a cheque bounces, let alone what happens if they lose it.

Banks can take a stupid amount of time to clear cheques - I used to have a basic account with Santander and then it was 7 working days to clear a cheque due to the levels of fraud they were getting on those accounts.
It took them nearly 2 weeks to clear a cheque from the NHS (my nursing student bursary) in which time I had no money at all.
I did seriously think about using a cheque cashing place then.
There was no-one waiting for money, I just needed to eat.
I realise that this is a slightly different situation but some of you are so dam quick to judge!
