My wife is not very confident behind the wheel of a car so I'm considering buying her a big 4x4, something along the lines of a Mitsubishi Warrior or Range Rover. I think this way she will feel alot safer and more confident because she will be driving a big vehicle. It will only be used to do the school run and the weekly shop, it will certainly never go off road except when she mounts the kerb outside the kid's school.

Opinions please

How will a large vehicle improve her confidence? Driving and getting experiance is the only way. We don't need another school run mum in a Chelsea tractor, and it not money-saving is it?

(If this is for real?) Why would driving an enormous vehicle make them more confident?

I can understand some drivers are happier with a higher driving position but if they are not confident then perhaps a Suzuki Jimney would be more appropriate?

  • You have to work out why she isn't confident.

If its road placement or general vehicle control, then there are other vehicles that could be considered, square shaped vehicles with proper auto boxes.

If she's intimidated by other vehicles, eg tailgaters which is understandable, my ex was but having travelled in my Landcruiser she realised it didn't matter how close they got you simply didn't worry about them, she since runs a light Daihatsu Sportrack, on her second now, and has never looked back.

A RR is a big motor, it weighs in at 2.7 tons, is almost as wide as a lorry, hardly something for a nervous driver.

Mitsi Warrior, could be Shogun based, nearly as big as RR, or are you considering a L200 pick up for her, narrower, but not pleasant for her in wet conditions keeping it on the road at all.

If she wants higher more substantial vehicle, wouldn't something like a Rav 4, Grand Vitara or similar be a more reasonable choice.

Do you maybe fancy a RR and this is a good excuse?...;)

This bit is believable - many drivers (and it does seem to be mostly women) feel safer because they have a lot of metal around them. Some of them become over-confident and don't actually bother about improving their driving as well.

Sounds like she shouldn't even be on the road in a motor vehicle!

Why not get her a cargo trycycle instead?

But think what it will do for her legs and backside. The OP won't need to do the trophy wife thing and add a gym/spa subscription to the cost of her 4x4! ;)

I used to drive a small supermini type car and found it harder to park than the nissan X-trail I now have. I find visability better, feel safer and more confident in it and don't think I would go back to a small car.

Why don't you get your wife to test drive lots of cars to see what she feels best in.
