"I'm having quite a few problems with him at the moment with bullying and abuse" Is this only our perception or is it actual bullying and abuse? Going on the email thing alone it sounds to me like you're being micro-managed and this could be due to your manager not having confidence in you being just left to get on with things on your own. I have encountered a couple of micro-managers myself in the past and my strategy was to consult them for advice and then offer my ownsolutions. Often. They both got bored with it in the end because it became obvious that I could manage quite well without their constant input
The bullying and abuse is very straightforward, he swears and calls you an F'ing idiot (possibly i am), then the next minute he tries to be your friend. The Abuse is a whole other matter and involves him emailing when drunk.. The sad part is i have been there 4 years now and am the only original member of the team, everyone else has quite, due to his nastiness (swearing, abuse, horrible emails telling you how crap you are). i would quit if i could afford to, but i have babies to pay for. my OH has a good job, but i love my work Bar the boss) and working makes me feel good (apart from when he is in the office).STARTING BALANCE JAN 09 £47,400

I would leave the first alone at first - too easy to get branded "soft" or "too sensitive". The second however I would try to do something about.
Do you have any other management of the same level or above? Or are you in a really small company and he is the only management?0 -
he is my line manager and the CEO. There are other managers and an MD, however i am not allowed to speak to them regarding my role. i'm getting the feeling he is a bit on a control freak mixed with schizophreniaSTARTING BALANCE JAN 09 £47,400

I would say you aren't speaking to them about "your role". You are speaking to them about "receiving abusive emails from a colleague sent whilst they are drunk".
Personally I'd call it a hostile working environment but be aware I am not sure of the legal definition of that term so take advice if you want to go that route.0
