monitoring company emails

Hi,

I know companies have the right to monitor work emails, my question is i have just found out my boss has my email account set up to go to him also, it downloads to his phone and computer.

Does anyone know if this is allowed?

I'm having quite a few problems with him at the moment with bullying and abuse, this is only 1 of lots of small things :(

p.s there is nothing in there that would get me in trouble, and he hasn't complained about anything in there

Eek. I can't offer you any practical advice. But I really wouldn't like that at all, that's a bit beyond the big brother thing.
Data protection is there for you, not for companies to hide behind

Other than a dedicated snooper, who else would you expect to monitor your emails?

i fully understand monitoring emails, but my questions is if it allowed. They aren't log gin in every now and then to see monitor, they are receiving them as if its their own account, which i find odd.

i just wanted to know if thats allowed. my guess is it probably is :(

    I have seen this before.

Yes it is allowed - although it may seem extreme, they are monitoring your e-mails.

Also, he may monitor yours in this way but not any others - although not exactly fair please do not fall into the trap of thinking that this is "discrimination" as it is not (just make sure that all work e-mails are work related only etc.

IT, usually. And I'd say that monitoring usually comprises key words or filtered terms.

I don't know any company whose 'monitoring emails' process includes forwarding / downloading ALL emails from one particular employee to a manager's inbox.

As I'm sure you already knew when you posted: the point isn't who is monitoring the emails - but the fact that all emails are being sent to someone else's inbox.

I'm afraid I don't have any advice for you OP, but I really hope you get it sorted. Is this the same for other employees? How big is your company? Is it something the manager set up?

i don't think its discrimination as i know they are doing the same to a couple of others. its not a large company, maybe 30 employees in total.

He knows i am aware he is monitoring my emails as he is forwarding emails addressed just to me, back to myself from his iphone, with comments (good comments thank god)

Do you have an IT department? If so, there will be some kind of official policy, and you can find out what the deal is.

I would find it cr4ppy though and be looking for a different employer anyway. If they have so little faith that you'll do an honest job without every single email being snooped, frankly who wants to work for them?

A friend of mine found out that her husband had done this to her email account.

It didn't end well. The marriage that is.

Sorry, back to your situation... I don't know the precise legalities of it, but I suspect you're right and that it comes beneath the company's right to monitor employee's emails. In your situation I think I'd just bear in mind that someone else is reading all your messages, ensure they are completely and utterly professionally written (and no personal ones in there), and look for a new job where there is a slightly higher level of trust asap!

I would wonder why it is being done.

We actually do this. Everyone here's incoming emails are copied to their immediate supervisor and a partner. We find it helps communication, we are all working together so there's nothing 'secret' anyway, and it enables things to be dealt with quickly if someone is off.

But it is universal. Everyone. And it's not to monitor email use, as such.

If you are the only one OP, then I'd be asking why.

I've seen the case where a PA has access to the bosses emails. So no reason why the boss shouldn't have access to yours, in case you are off sick or not around.

However I'd also expect this to be clear up front.
