Switching Car Insurance Address- How to Lower The Cost

Options
Hi,

So a month and a half I took out car insurance at my home address. I was happy with the price and took it with Churchill.

Now I've had to move and I called them today about changing my address. They've quoted me £95 to do this!

Is this negotiable? How do I lower this cost? They said it the premium for the property but my boyfriend on a different policy didn't have to pay a penny!

I thought there would be a cost to this but that's nearly an extra fifth to my policy!

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Depends how the insurers categorise the address really. Is your car on the road for example where your boyfriends is on the drive?

Also some will sting you for £25 admin fee, some won't.

A generic guide to areas here http://www.carinsuranceexplained.com/car-insurance-explained/car-insurance-postcode-risk-list.html just in case there is a big difference (no idea how up to date the link is though).

  • I just looked at that list. It's D which does't really explain it!

No mine and my boyfriends are both on the road but they didn't even ask us this. I'd understand if it's a rough area but it's a really nice area!

Oh and Churchill waived the fine which was lovely of them. Still came to £95!

D would be risky. Certainly below average.

Remember tea leaves are not fans of robbing off their neighbours. they'd rather visit a nice area where it is less obvious than steraling the car across the street. Perhaps when this report was done there had been a few instances of theft in the area.

As I said, it's a fairly fluid thing from speaking to brokers.

  • Hmm I was thinking of getting in touch about cancelling it and looking at the fee to see if it's worth switching. I'd have to look into that though

Any mid term change costs. I'm sure it's nothing to do with the change, or decrease in risk. You'll find it's a similar sort of price to cancelling, and the loss of premium you'll have on the refund. Then you'll lose this years ncd. It's worth getting a dummy quote for the old address, and the new address. Use a dummy name, close postcode, and generic car. Then you could try bargaining with the insurer. If they won't move, all you can do is shop around at renewal.

They know they have you over a barrel and rip you off. At next renewal the premium will be down again as you have a choice. Churchill did this to me and I won't use them again. Also changed other insurances on renewal away from Churchill.
