Nationwide crazy charges

I just went into the Windsor branch of Nationwide to get 3 months statements printed out and they charged £10..... £10 for 3 print outs.
Crazy. They couldn't give me an explanation of why it cost so much - quite useless in fact.
Has anyone else had similar experiences with them?

Closing my account tomorrow.... i couldn't today as they have to take the £10 charge.

And they wonder when we hate them!

Hate who exactly? Nationwide is a building society.

Funnily enough had your account been with a nasty profit seeking bank such as HSBC or Lloyds you wouldn't have been charged you at all.

Had they already provided you the information online? Or by post?

Yes they had supplied statements that had been lost in a house move so i needed the duplicates.
I would have no problem paying - but a fair charge.
What does it actually cost them to access and print out - pence per output surely.

If there copy statements that you had already been sent then it does state in there terms and conditions, that they will charge for each copy statement that you request.

Most banks charge £10 for a copy statement its in there terms and conditions. As you requested 3 copies they rightly charged you £10 for each copy which is correct.

I gave up on Nationwide years ago, their interest rates suck bigtime (both for savings and mortgages), the customer service (certainly at my branch) was terrible and they proclaim mutuality is a great thing.
    Nothing to see here

Isn't the point that these companies have to charge a fee that reflects the cost of the service (lots of talk on this from bit Mart, but also check out data protection request charges)? I guess working out the "cost" of producing these duplicates is arguable but it would be reasonable to ask.

It doesn't seem very MSE just to accept the status quo. Imagine if the reaction to unfair contract terms was always "you agreed to it". This site prob wouldn't exist!

You could have course printed them out yourself.
Nationwide have your last 6 years statements available online in pdf format.

Unfortunately, that is not the case. In a recent test case the Lords have judged that such charges are part of the package you accept when you open your account.

Depends to some extent what you need it for.

When I went into a Nationwide branch to get copies of statements for the last year for a financial declaration, I was told I could have copies of the actual statements for a fee, or a simple printout of the year's transactions & balance for free. I chose the latter and it was fine.

It's the standard charge for any subject access request. Some business charge less, others (as pointed out) don't charge at all.
