Cam belt snapped, think I need to scrap the car :(

how is it £900 worth of damage? that's recon engine money.Hi, I have an R reg Seat Arosa, it passed its MOT a few weeks ago but now the cam belt has snapped, causing about £900 worth of damage. Should it be scrapped? How do you do that? It's currently at the garage.

Emr (European metal recyclers) buy scrap cars. Check see if you have a branch near you. You do need to take it to them.
Also check your local classified ads to see if any say scrap cars wanted. They will pay you so much and then take your car to emr. Making them about £50. But they are able to take non-runners.
Last year phoned up a add for scrap cars wanted. He took r reg ford escort and gave me £130.
Which was a deposit on the insurance for my new car.0 -
Try getting a quote online through somewhere like cartakeback.com - no obligation and you might get a nice surprise (or not). I used them for a dead Rover last year and they picked it up on time, emailed the desruction certificate and paid cash on collection.
Unless you really love the car, not worth fixing IMO unless you can find a second hand engine as suggested above.0 -

Sorry to be pedantic, but an MOT does not guarantee the mechanical condition of the vehicle. Nor is it a service. It's merely a safety check, which only applies at the time of the check. The cam belt is NOT one of the things checked. In fact, on diesels, MOT centres will often make you aware of the need to have your cambelt replaced as specified by the MFR, due to the nature of the emissions test on diesels that places it under lots of strain.
Sorry to say, I suspect your cambelt snapped as the car was poorly maintained, and the cambelt replacement interval was not adhered to.Wanted a job, now have one. :beer:0 -

On a diesel I would always aim well below the replacement period for the cambelt. Had one snap on a petrol laguna before, no damage, but on my current diesel, I dread to think.
70k later I punted the laguna to cartakeback and got £170.BEWARE OF AUTO-RENEWAL0 -
Get it out of the garage soon as, they may charge storage if they don't get the job. If it's legal you can just push it to the side of the road and get the scrapper to pick it up. Scrap it, it's not worth the hassle of throwing money at it. Plenty of cheap motors out there. Take anything you think you may sell out of it first, like radio, battery, spare wheel etc,0

While I'd endorse taking useful things out of a car before disposal, unless you are a hoarder, make sure the bits really are useful.
Fitted mats are useless unless you are buying a similar model, (don't pretend you need them for kneeling mats) and I've just come across the two IKEA storage bins of old radio/cassettes that I realise that I'm never going to find a home for!0 -
