Help please tax credit renewal

Hi I am looking for some advice please, I completed my renewal over the phone on 31 st May and they said phone back in 6 weeks if you haven't heard anything so I phoned on Tuesday and the person I spoke to said they are still checking the information I gave them and once they have completed their investigation I will hear from them. So I am very concerned now because it says on their website that if they are investigating your claim they will write to you and tell you they are investigating but I have had nothing. I asked him how long it would be but he couldn't or wouldn't tell me. I don't know what to do now, how long should i wait to call them back! Last year they investigated every aspect of my claim and they wrote to me about each part and I wonder if that has something to do with it, that maybe they investigate you every year if they have done it before, I work 30 hours a week and I have 3 children, I don't have child care costs and I am on my own with them. I do have a relationship of sorts with my ex although we have never lived together and i have always claimed as a single person because we have never lived together even when we were together, i am really worried so anyone's advice would be great

If everything you have told them is correct then there is no need for you to be worried. You should only be worried if anything you've told them is wrong

  • Thank you I am definitely not hiding anything. I was just concerned because it usually only takes a couple of weeks and the man on the phone said they were still checking the information I had given, he wouldn't tell me how long it would take either. I just worry about stuff especially where the government is concerned!

Hi, the reason he couldn't tell you, is because id likely not to be him dealing with it, so he has no idea when it will be sorted.I had a compliance check in My end- i've only just got the all clear this week. I know it's unnerving but don't worry:)

Does you ex have any financial ties with you, eg any joint acconts, does he pay any of your household bills in eg lieu of child maintenance or sky tv/broadband for the kids etc. This is one of the things they look for, so even if you've never lived together this could make them suspicious.
  • Just the mortgage he helped me to buy this house 8 years ago when I moved here but he has never lived in this house and I let him use the address for his mail. But whatever they are suspicious of he has never ever lived here and regardless of what they think the truth is the truth!

Allowing him to receive his mail at your home could be awkward, doesn't he have an address where he is registered for council tax.

Is he registered as living at your address with his bank, driving licence, passport, any bank loans.....
Forums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.
  • No he doesn't have a permanent address he just stays with friends and his parents sometimes, i think his bank account is registered here but it's more for security than anything else. I only see him about once a week when he comes to visit the children. He doesn't contribute to the house at all apart from giving the children some pocket money but I don't get any other money from him. I went through all this with them last year as well I don't know why they are doing it all again, it is very stressful
