Have followed your thread, but not posted as yet.

Sorry to hear that your boss is indead the waste of space you thought they were. We all have to deal with people like that at some point- it's just rustrating when they are in any position of authority.

Hope all goes well with your GP in the morning - Im guessing you will be calling in sick to your boss with the biggest smile on your face!!

Thank you scrappie it is indeed very frustrating when people in authority misuse their positions to walk over others. The ironic thing is had we done nothing at all we still would have got the same bonus, so literally we broke our backs for nothing. Oddly enough my colleague and I both seem to have picked up a virus, i genuinely feel like death today so when i called in sick this morning it was the honest truth, so I dont even have to feel guilty now for leaving them in it :)

It must be irritating, but at least now you can draw a line under it and concentrate on more important things!

So just a word of advice, always get any bonus proposals etc in writing, dont be naive like me and believe that agreements made are honoured and that hard work would be rewarded regardless . And thank you again to everyone who responded for all your sage advice. Im just going to focus on my little one now and put this whole sorry business down as experience and a lesson learnt.

Sorry to hear you are not getting your bonus. If I was you I would be happily swanning off on Mat Leave without the slightest bit of guilt!

Re getting things in writing, sometimes even that doesn't work. My contract says

"You are eligible to participate in a discretionary annual bonus plan, details of the targets for which will normally be communicated to you early in the financial year. This bonus plan will include a “target” payment of 10% of basic salary and a “maximum” of 20% of basic salary. Personal objectives will be discussed with you."

I was told (before accepting the role) this meant if I achieved my basic objectives, I would get 10%, and the 'stretch' target would be 20%. Turns out it means nothing - they just randomly decide. Really annoying as this was a key factor in me choosing this job over another one. My boss has literally said 'well that isn't binding, we just decide each year'. Why include it in the contract at all then! If it came to it, somehow I suspect the 'maximum' side of the equation would apply...

Livalicious - as you say it is always best to get these things in writing. I have a boss who is so busy that he forgets what we agreed about things so for something like this I would send him an e-mail saying "thanks for the proposed bonus, just to confirm the agreement is £x for xx happening". It covers your back and gives you something to challenge him with when he changes his mind !

Time2deal how annoying for you that u took the job specifically for the bonus terms laid out in your contract. So really you could or possibly not get a bonus not based on the work you put in but just on your boss's say so. Hopefully he will be fair and give you what you due.

clw1 that is a pretty good way of confirming things in writing by way of email, will definitely do that in future to save myself alot of unnecessary heartache
