Turn cellular data off as well. Make sure you turn it off before you leave the country.

Don't know about iPhones, but I would use a local PrePaid SIM. If your iPhones are locked to the network, unlock them or get yourself a cheap phone for travel.

The other alternative is to not take it with you and take a candybar phone, the Spanish have iphones too

This is the best advice. See:

In that case, buy a cheap £10 phone and get a PAYG sim and stick £20-£30 credit on it, which should be more than enough for your week away.

That way, you know exactly how much your spending and know what your phone bill will be.

Why take £1,000+ of phone on holiday? Leave it safely at home and just get a cheapie :)

Stupid advice. The iPhone is a £500 phone, and it would be wasteful not to use it, having spent so much on it.

The advice may be stupid, though not because he advised not to take the iPhone, but because he advised using a UK PAYG SIM.

The iPhone sounds like a PITA, having to unlock and possibly Jailbreak in order to retain full function when using another network's SIM.

The one positive thing is the the OP's costs will be capped in Spain, unless he opts out.

Since most people will have an old mobile phone lying around, it can be unlocked and used in conjunction with a local SIM.

I use plenty of local SIM cards in my iPhone without jailbreaking and I have full functionality. I don't know what you mean.

Full function means the use of third party Apps.
Depends on whether your was unlocked by the network or by a hack.

Network Unlock is best, then no problem.
