Virgin Media Broadband Speed Increase

Options
Hi,

We have been with Virgin Media since we moved house in 2010 i.e. just over 2 years.

We went with them as we used to have them a few years ago and always found the broadband to be fast and reliable.

During the past 2 years we stayed with our original signup package of TV 'L' and Broadband 'L'.

However they keep putting the price up and so when I rang a few months ago to try and negotiate a better deal they gave me a monthly discount for three or so months currently we are paying £33.00 p/m for TV 'L' and Broadband 'L'.

We have now realised that we only use the TV 'L' for catchup and rarely watch the actual live channels so I have purchased a Freeview PVR/going to look into other ways of recording programmes.

So today I rang them on 0800 9522277 and I cancelled the TV package, I asked if they could upgrade the broadband as I was also thinking of cancelling that but the lady would not.

A friend of mine 250 metres up the road recently telephone them to renegotiate his packages and he says that they have upgraded his broadband (20MB or 30MB, I'm not sure which).

I had a mailing to say they would be upgrading to 20MB and when I checked online my area is due in October. I asked for the upgrade straight away and said new customers are being offered 30MB - she said that is "up to 30MB" and new customers will be told when they can expect that speed.

I said that they should be advertising "up to 10MB" then as 30MB according to her reasoning is not possible in my area (I had put my postcode in on the Virgin Media website) but she disagreed.

She also said that my friend may be on a "different cable", I just said you are offering new customers better deals so I will look elsewhere.

Then she told me I would not be able to get more than 10MB elsewhere (not true, I said, at my previous address BE:Unlimited provided us with 18MB via ADSL2) - she said "were you right next to the exchange?" - nope I said, we were about the same distance away from the exchange as we are now!

Anyway, just wondering what the deal here is as I have read on another website that Broadband 'L' customers on 10MB will only get 20MB whilst new customers get 30MB, so it seems what the lady said about us getting 30MB in October was pure fiction..

I only really need a fast broadband connection, and > 10MB I have at the moment would be fantastic.

Am I going to have to actually cancel and sign up in my partners name to get 30MB?

Kind of silly that existing customers get treated so shabbily..

I forget to add.. once my 30 days notice are up on the TV 'L' I will be paying £22.50 a month for Broadband 'L' 10MB..

I've been on their 20Mb service for years, and got 10-16mb reliably. Having been invited to upgrade to the new 60Mb service for no cost, I did, and now get a reliable 16-18Mb. I'll let you know when he extra Mb ever arrives!
