Card protection policy renewal query

Hi...sorry if this is in the wrong area ...I recently received a letter from Barclays saying they were about to renew my cardholder protection policy at the princely sum of £84. Until this point I had no idea I even had the policy & no longer even have an active current acc with them. I wrote back to ask them to cancel immediately as well as querying when it was last renewed & could they send me a copy of my application as it meant nothing to me

They have replied to say they last renewed the policy 3 years ago, including a debit to my account which clearly I never noticed (bad management on my part but then I did used to have a lot of ddrs/entries on my account back then). They also said there isn't a hard copy of any application form as it was arranged back in August 2003 over the telephone but that I would have received a welcome pack at the time - again, all news to me!

Is this right? Are they able to just rely on some internal note that they arranged it over the phone with me & then take the premiums? To be honest I don't even recall seeing a renewal letter back in 09 otherwise it would have prompted me to raise the query then. Any advice would be appreciated. I feel slightly aggrieved at paying for something I never even knew I had!

You've had the cover for the last 3 years and you've now cancelled. Continuous authority payments are very common and rely on you making sure that you want or need the cover, and that you cancel it if you don't. Nowhere to go with your question really. Yes they can do this.

I understand about continuous authority etc... I just don't get how its ok without the need to evidence I originally accepted the policy & its T&C's in the first place that's all

The policy ran for 3 years, if you're going to argue that you didn't accept their T & C's it will be a bit hard after that timeframe. You should have queried it when you were first debited really.

understood...except that I didn't see the renewal debit go out or receive a renewal notice giving me the option to cancel. Just seems strange there is no original "agreement" for me to review so I know for certain what I apparently signed up to. Oh well
