Paypal account

Hello there, I am a newbie to the ebay thing.

I have bought some items on ebay and have paid using my ebay account - no problems at all encountered.

I sold my first item last night and the buyer has tried to pay me with paypal.

Unfortunately, my paypal account has rejected his payment.

Does anyone know why this has happened and what I can do to sort the account out so that I can accept paypal payments?

Many thanks x

  • I would imagine that you only have a personal a/c and so cannot accept payments from his credit card via paypal, only if he has funds in his paypal a/c. You have to upgrade to a business account and then you are charged for the pleasure of receiving payments.

You probably still have the basic paypal account whihc means you can't accept payments made with credit cards. In order to accept all payments you'll need to upgrade your account to a premier account I think it's called which is free to do. If you go onto the Paypal website and log in there's somewhere to click upgrade. The only downside is that they'll charge you for all payments received however it's the only option if you want to offer Paypal as a payment option!

Do you know how much you are charged to receive payments?

Since I doubt you're (the OP that is) a merchant the cost is actually 3.4% + £0.20 GBP + The WORST Customer Service in existance + Probable loss of hundreds of pounds due to scammers and chargebacks.

In future, I would recommend also accepting NoChex (https://www.nochex.com) as a payment method in your auctions. (Cheaper fees, guaranteed against chargebacks (and therefore scammers) and extremely good customer service - with their own support forum (http://greenroom.nochex.com/)

I second what Gordon says. And third it and possibly even forth it ;)

Flippin eck - their fees are rather high!

I think I've figured what I have done or haven't done for that matter.

For some reason, I hadn't "verified" the account. I tried to do it this evening, by the automated callback system, but dear boyfriend started talking so I misheard what to do! They are sending me something in the post, so that I can verify my account and I assume accept paypal payments from buyers.

The kind buyer in the meantime has kindly offered to send me a cheque as payment instead - technology eh!

Thanks everyone for your help. Hopefully I'll get it sorted soon xx

I stopped offering nochex having ever only had about 2 people use it in all the years I offered it. The charges on transactions are only marginally cheaper than paypals and it meant that I never built up the £50 needed for minimum withdrawal which cost me another 25p each time I withdraw.

Also it means that you can't sell overseas, which limits your end price even further. Also for more expensive items watch for maximum daily amounts as that limits you even further.

I have never had problems with paypal and my end prices are much higher when I accept it. Ebay is only a small part of my life, I prefer not to waste time waiting for cheques, going to the bank, waiting for clearance and dealing with emails asking where the goods are (cheque payers always want their things immediately despite taking for ever to send a cheque). Paypal is quick and easy and saves time. Most of my auctions are paid for within the hour. I can acknowledge the payments and send the items within 24 hours and I have a high feedback count to show for my quick turnround.

I'd personally be happy accepting money by any method people want to pay by. If blood of virgins and wooly sheep were still legal tender I'd stick that on my ebay auctions too! :D

You're spot on about the limitations though - but if it attracts even 1 extra bid, then I'm happy. ;)

    Cheers,
