I've come across several people in the UK who have been raised in countries with little or no social welfare provision. There's a difference in their attitude when hardship bites. Their first actions aren't to ask What am I entitled to? but to ask themselves What can I do to help myself? This might be flogging some of their belongings, hustling around for extra work, calling contacts to see what they can do, just generally shifting for themselves. Only belatedly, and sometimes with prompting, do they recall that they've paid their tax and NI and might be entitled to some help.
That said, during my time as a dementia worker, it was sometimes hard to get older carers accept the financial help/rebates that were available to them. Because they had been brought up on the concept of self reliance and anything else was 'charity'.0 -
Morning fellow wistful dreamers
Its a bit dark and overcast here this morning what a difference from yesterday it hit over 100 in the greenhouse!
Planted out a climbing courgette and some round ones and they look happy as larry today so hopefully I may get a good surplus for drying this year,I certainly planted enough :rotfl:
Need to *grudgingly* do a bit of housework as its all fell apart a bit due to the good weather but can potter round in between potting on my cukes and courgettes and squashes and peppers...
Daz I think I posted some links on here for communication aids during an emergency will see if I can find the links and repost them for you,may be some use have you come across Boardmaker its a very handy programme to have for visual aids.
Why was I dreaming about not being able to find my sandals last night???

Right need to get cracking Rosiedog needs unwedging from the chair where she's comfortably settled for the day given half a chance!

I know I've said this before but how many times do we hear 'We save the state money by looking after our dad/mum/etc/etc'. If you really think about this statement, it turns on its head the original concept of welfare - which was that the state stepped in where people couldn't help themselves.
That said, during my time as a dementia worker, it was sometimes hard to get older carers accept the financial help/rebates that were available to them. Because they had been brought up on the concept of self reliance and anything else was 'charity'.pineapple, years ago my Nan told me she'd once rung up the income support people and told them she didn't think she ought to have this money.
The call-handler checked and reassured her that she was entitled to it.........I can imagine their astonishment, tho!
I've had some bruising and foul-mouthed (them, not me) encounters with people whose income from a variety of benefits is well above what many people in work are getting, who have the most mahoosive arrogance and sense of entitlement and feeling of being hard done-by. Frankly, if you have £2k a month coming in, I hardly think you're poor in this city; most people here don't earn £1k net and have to pay all their bills out of it, too.
I wonder if many people on housing benefit realise that the people calculating it are probably on lower incomes than they are? Or when they're kicking off about not having housing priority to get a council flat, and being advised to get into a house-share, and snarling at us that they'd rather sleep on the streets than share a house, that many of us can only afford to be sharers?
It constantly amazes me.:p
Have been for a ramble around the chazzers on preptastic business and was sorely-tempted by a cast iron frying pan, but have resisted. Cannot live in a tiny home thinking; if if gets really bad and I have to cook on a camp fire, that cast iron frying pan would've been really really useful............Well, I could, but that way lies Hoarder Next Door territory.
Going to have a light luncheon then stroll up to the lottie to play in the dirt for a few hours. I hear that millions (Mike Millions, Mandy Millions and their offspring) are stuck in a car on the way to the coast or somewhere. And I'm not there..............YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I've just had a mild fan related incident which is now thankfully fixed!!! Got back from the morning dog perambulation and went to make coffee, we have a Nespresso machine, and there was water all over the work surfact it stands on. I thought I'd not fitted the water reservoir properly and it had leaked, not so, when _ looked up at the wall behind it, there are big bulges behind the plaster. Oh eck I thought, the airing cupboard is directly overhead and when I looked the drain from the bottom of the hot water tank was dripping well. Luckily our plumber has emergency cover and came straight away, we had to drain the entire system and turn off the water so he could replace the washer and now it is all better and drying out. Why oh why do these things only happen when He Who Knows is busy and not at home? Never mind, but I suspect we'll have to have the kitchen wall replastered, at least I have hot water again, off for coffee, I NEED IT!!!!!!!!! Cheers Lyn xxx.0

 It's The Curse of the Bank Holiday Weekend.
Mum's cooker is on the blink and her washing machine died yesterday. We're keeping fingers crossed for the fridge-freezer over there, and these things often come in threes.
Stay safe.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Oh yes it is!!!!!! what a good thing I have all my emergency water containers - full - or I might have been in a small panic, however, I had enough to see us through the weekend and water barrels outside to use to flush the loos when needed, this being prepared mindset isn't just for the end of things as we know them is it??? My other exciting purchase today is a Draper 4 in 1 mini screwdriver for just £1.49
You could've had one of these for a quid.
Comes with 3 each of flat, crosspoint (aka Phillips) and hexagon (aka Allen Key) bits, which store in the handle.
I carry one everywhere.
BTW: both your links are to the same item. How about a link to the folding shovel?0 -
GQ, cast iron frying pan's are very heavy, so if you do decide to get 1 and you do have to grab the bob bag may I sugest you have special elasticated loop for the pan on the outside 'cause then you can use it like my Gran did as a weapon to defend yourself with.£71.93/ £180.000

I'd hate to think a bit of baking was beyond me.
So, I made a 4 quarters cake.
It's cooling right now and, for my first attempt in years (I have made them before, but not for yonks), I think it's come out alright.
OK, so it did take 10-15 minutes longer than normal (maybe my current oven isn't as hot as my old one was), and the top cracked a bit, but it looks and smells OK.0
