Tenth Anniversary Combo Breaker Debt-free and Proud!

    Hi everyone.
I'm a long time lurker. I have been reading with keen interest since end of july.

You have all inspired me greatly. When i first spoke to my husband about being prepared he thought i was nuts. He jumped to the conclusion that i was preapring for the end of the world. I've told him many times if the world is going end through some sort of asteriod or catastrophe i intend on being with my family and going down with the ship so to speak!

What i am preparing for is the price rising we will invetiably be facing due to poor crops worldwide. Also my husband is self-employed and we live cheque to cheque at the moment, and like this week, he hasn't been paid for a job, so i cant go shopping and have to rely on what i have in to feed us for as long as needed.

I have managed to sway him with the food, and the camping stove and gas (as its good have a back up), but the candles and the water he thinks is a step too far.

We had a power cut 3 weeks ago at 10pm and i couldnt find a lighter that worked (we're ex smokers) the gas cooker igniter is from the mains so it took us 20mins and 4lighters sparking to get the candle to light. the next day i bought home a box of matches and 200 tea lights from wilkos.

I made him watch the programmes on prepping that have been on Nat Geo lately and showed how far some people take it. He doesnt think i'm so nuts anymore and now supports me as he finally gets it thats it gives me a sense of security. He cant wait for the doodsday preppers to start on wednesday :D

A friend kindly donated their bread maker to use and i have been making my own bread for 2 weeks now and stocked up on bread flour, and yeast to protect against the guaranteed prices rises due. My husband has fitted shelves in our old airing cupboard which was used for storing junk and christmas presents, and now has my spare stocks.

The next project is to recycle the shelves from my mums old kitchen units and fit them into ours so i have 2 shelves (3 storage layers including the floor) for our own based units so i everything isnt layered up.

:T Keep up the good work everyone :T and i'm so glad i'm not the only one who has these thoughts.

I thought the hummus would be good to put in the bob bags along with some crackers or something.

I was in Mr S today and the checkout lady remarked about the amount of tinned stuff so explained I was trying to get ahead of the changes next year. She had read about them in the paper so I said some of the stuff was for my kids to help with the grandchildren and she said she was already buying hers big items (her words) such as toilet rolls and washing powder. I think my shopping gave her food for thought
(sorry:) ). She was even more impressed when the total came up. I got mostly basics brand and there would have been 7 or more carriers but I just put everything back in the trolley so she gave me points for 12 carrier bags because I was helping my kids. Kind huh? I also had a voucher £6 off a £40 shop and got another when I paid.

Hello Mrslds and anyone else new or delurked.
  • For those looking forward to the Wartime Farm series on BBC, the accompanying book is now on The Book People for £6.99 and there's normally a code rattling around for free delivery :)
Despite the name, I'm actually a laydee!
  • What a find this thread is. Just started reading today, I'm a beginner prepper, but now have so many ideas.

I did a major kitchen refurb last year including putting in a log burner. I managed to accidentally smoulder a fire mitt that I left on top of it. From reading this thread I'm now going to try making a bit of bread on it when the cold weather sets in. If I can burn a glove I'm sure I can bake a bit of soda bread or something!

I've got heaps of logs in and if we get a dry september I'll gather as much kindling as poss from walking the dogs in the woods and store it up. Much preferable than paying a fiver for a bag in the shops.

And who knew tumble dryer fluff and shreddings could be so useful. Genius!!

To all those wanting to seal up chimneys and doors etc, please please get a carbon monoxide alarm!

Wish me well on my prepper journey! I'm off to make two doggie go boxes...

    mrs lds,
All good reasons for having a food store, I took time building up mine but will stop now and I did the same with buying items that may have to last me long ingto the future...

Its not that we are always thinking of emergenices on a grand scale just a change in circumstances like the loss of a job, reduction in income, loss of benefits, having to care for someone, worry of losing a roof over your head whether getting into difficulty of affording the mortguage or paying rent and the introduction of various extra expenses like a bedroom tax and changes regarding CT...many other reasons I have missed and this can all happen suddenly.

Most of what I have were obtained from CS(my main outlet charges 99p)or discount supermarkets/own brand ranges...so even if money is tight now it can still be done...just.

One of my jobs is a Money Adviser. The vast majority of my debt clients are in that situation due to a change in circumstance, exactly as you have detailed above. It always makes me think twice about committing to long term spending. Who knows what tomorrow will bring?

 hello to all the newbies/delurkers
