Had a reasonable day(and managed to get concessions on some tickets for some shows I wish to see in the next few months(£6 is a saving and welcome)they don't usually give me it but I guess it depends who you see...I wasn't going to say no.

I had a big shop in a £1 shop(spent £13)but all things I can use and...saving the money on the shows meant it was though my shop had only cost £8.

My personal SHTF I was discussing things with my Dr earlier today and having kidney disease has increased my chances of a heart attack due to raised blood pressure and slightly higher cholesterol so he's trying me on statins. Diet makes little difference though I eat healthily.

Without the KD my rating would be well under the risk factor. I am around 22% risk. He says if they are not for me...he can take me off them again and everything will return to as I am now...

I have to have a blood test in a month to check my liver is ok and the cholesterol. That's around 5.

Have finally taken the plunge and registered! Have been lurking for years and prepping accordingly. Just wanted to say hi ((waves))
:T Hi, great to have you join the Tin Hat Brigade.

craigyw, loving it that you spotted a fellow prepper. Be great if she registered and joined us. Mebbe she's lurking now*waves*.

I find myself watching other people's shopping if I'm in line at the check-out and trying to figure what they're doing. You can see the makings of a party or a BBQ. Oftentimes, I'm thinking that there's no shelf-stable stuff there at all and wondering what their cupboards are like at home.

I was in one of the army surplus places last week and a woman my own age, and equally normal looking, came in with a great long list. She was obviously a regular and was chatting with the counter bloke. I was nonchalantly trying to read her list to see if it qualified her as a prepper but couldn't......:rotfl:

As Nanny Ogg would have put it; Let me through, I'm nosy!

More insanity in LaLa Land today, ankle deep in bedroom tax. Quite a lot of people are on the move but there are limited places available with only one bedroom and they're the hottest properties in town. Somone suggested why don't I try exchanging my one bedroom flat as I'd likely be spoiled for choice (they don't know the rep of The Towers, obvs) but I won't. Have dodgy health and might end up on benefit myself and then be bedroom-taxed, too. But a craft room/storage space would be lovely.

Totally agree with whomever remarked about what the NK sabre-rattling might be disguising. A few years ago, I coined the term Orphan News, just to myself. It happened that a Concorde crashed on takeoff in Paris, remember that, 2000? The news broke late in the day, when all the news stories for the evening programmes would have been in place.

And elbowed them out. Because it was shocking and more newsworthy. And I wondered what those stories were and did they ever resurface and coined the term Orphan News. So, whenever something major is hogging 70%+ of the news all of a sudden, I wonder what is being quietly kicked into the long grass and forgotten about? And whether some of that might suit TPTB very nicely?

It's a strange and convoluted place, the inside of the GQ brain, powered by tea and chocolate. I imagine it as something designed by Heath Robinson. Quite possibly with cogs. And a string with a knot in it.

S'pose I should wash up. But mebbe I should drink more tea, first? Wouldn't do to make more washing up afterwards, would it? Want to have clear decks by bedtime.

My DD has just become a victim of the bedroom tax. She lives in a 1 bed flat in London, it is in a council block due for demolition but her landlords are a property guardian company (they let out empty properties to stop them being vandalised) So the council are recalling the flats so DD is being evicted at the end of the month. I understand the councils problem (though the block is due for domolition within a year or two so then where will everybody live) DD hoped to be able to find an alternative with her landlords probably in a shared house of some sort (they let out closed nursing homes, office blocks - anything that sould be used - so hopefully she will be alright. She might actually be better off in the end but it is a worry.

:( I'm sorry to hear about your daughter's home. I''ve heard about these property guardians and it sounds an interesting business. Sending all good hopes that they will find her another place in time and that it will be even better.

Going to do various things tomorrow, some of which relate to prepperish matters (I suppose allotmenteering could be deemed prepping lol) and some of which might involve normal matters. My home is gradually accreting a number of wonderful things in cupboards, nooks and crannies, whilst looking normal(ish) on the surface.

Being secretive is key, I think.

Thanks for the kind thoughts GQ - her biggest problem really is she can get a room but it really needs to be near where she works (Catford) as she is min wage and she can't really swallow higher travel costs. It looks likr her main option is Croydon at the moment. :)

Easy to visit her there though we have had good deals at the Hilton there and it is across the road from costco so cheap meals in their cafe :rotfl:

Jayne that sounds lovely. I've always been into herbs and at one time that was my retirement plan - making balms, salves, and beeswax furniture polish at home :)

    Thanks Mar,

I made a load of balms, scrubs, butters, etc and did a pre-Christmas craft fair. I sold a grand total of ONE!!! item, and that was only because I'd looked after the lady's shopping bags whilst she browsed:(. I was due to do another 2 but cancelled them. If the workshops happen I may be able to sell things there as they have a little shop selling various crafts that are made there. Fingers crossed:p. I could also sell potted herbs. I guess if I pulled my finger out I could find outlets that could sell for me at a commission. This may be a motivator, note to self - *need to research outlets*.
I did also try a Country Market and sold a few potted herbs, but it tended to be the same (older) people buying cakes and pies. It was costing more in petrol to get there than I made, so gave that up:(.

Hi Helen 2K8:wave: nice to find someone [STRIKE]as crackers as me[/STRIKE]likeminded:)

My forest gardening is a slow process as it's a very overgrown plot. There's some fruiting tress and bushes in there but so overshadowed/over-run with nettles and bindweed that they're not very productive.... yet. I am doing ok with strawberries though:D. I will get there...

I had thought about making one area an orchard with chickens but it would be expensive to fence and it's a Landshare garden, so the owner could just decide to move one day. I don't really want to invest a great deal of money - just incase. I have pondered living willow fencing if I could scavenge some, hmmm.

I do a lot of pondering - I should just get my arriss into gear and get on with it:cool:

On another ponder;) I've been thinking about my top priority preps. Thinking about an extreme SHTF situation I guess any stored food would eventually run out, so what would be required in the long term...?

    Seeds,
Knives (for foraging, killing/gutting small livestock/game, gardening, veg peeling&chopping, etc)
Good saw and axe for firewood (possibly shelter building)
    Water filtering kit
    Cooking pot
    Books (info/advice)

Add a tarp incase of having to manage outdoors ( and can be rigged to collect rainwater too) and I think that would keep you going:p.

Sorry to hear everyone's worries. Big Hug.

I so love this section compared to the rest of MSE it's the best. :D

Tooth a bit better, not so much pain it's attached to a bridge and is going to have to come out, so two for the price of one!! But worse things happen at sea!

I'm so behind with you lot with prepping. My first problem is where do I put it all? I need to seriously de-clutter. I'm going to start car booting again this week or next of non essentials.

Is there like an essentials starter prepping list anywhere?

Tomorrow I'm going to make a start on some serious space clearing.

Have a good weekend everyone x

There is a list but I don't remember where it is...

Basically think of all the things you like to eat and would regularly and think of the non food items too. Think of things that can be eaten without being cooked...lots of dry goods and canned items...but you could also invest in lamps and candles to light the house in a power cut, bottled water and so on...
