GQ you can buy bleach tablets and as far as I can determine they last a long time. I buy mine from the pound shop in the cleaning section.
Cheapskate well done you for being strong enough to say no to your kids. They will thank you later.
I think I have the most unmaterialistic kids around here.
Neither of the two youngest hanker after the latest this and that (the older ones were born in the 70's and early 80's so no such gadgets). It is a poor area but there's many a child with a single parent who have the latest phones and gadgets and I have no idea how they can afford it on benefits because dh works and we can't.
I have a feeling there will be less kids having kids here once the cuts come in as they will not be able to get a free house anymore.
Them square plates are bloomin heavy. One of my dd has them. I covet the round plates in my Asian supermarket because they are thin light ones and a very pretty white with blue flowers. I like the different size bowls to match too. If you have arthritis you want light plates, carrying more than two of the squares is too heavy
Tea tree oil and eucalyptus oil are both anti bacterial and inti viral. They will keep well in a cool dark place unopened.
Thriftwizard can you not make things with your current machine to sell then use the money to buy the new one?
I bought a pie maker from ldl Thurday and it is fab. I have made chicken and veg pies with leftover chicken, mince beef ones from a big pan of mince, and muffins/buns. I just lined it with muffin cases and used my home made choc cake mix. I slightly over cooked the first ones as they were in 8 mins but the next ones got just over 6 mins and were fine.recipes and ideas online so am going to experiment. I wonder if it will do yorkshires? watch this space...........0 -
Oh Thrifty I'm not sure I can help you - I succumbed to a sooper dooper Juki which does all sorts of things. My sewing machine chap really rates them, more so than Pfaff which have outsourced production to the Far East now.
Actually having said that, I am still a bit intimidated by it and still prefer my old Swiss made Bernina in my heart of hearts. My DD1 has taken on my Bernina (though I've said she can't actually HAVE it) but I could see me letting her have the new sooper dooper one eventually, when I have used it enough not to feel guilty about all the money it cost, especially as she is into patchwork and quilting.
Oh and all those alphabets? They still don't look as good as a proper embroidery machine.
Does that help? I do understand I really do.It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -

Thank you, maryb you have already helped me with that one comment! So it may well not be as robust & sturdy as my older machine, despite the fancy stitches... and grandma247 thank you too for the suggestion.
If I can't talk myself out of it, I probably need to look for a secondhand one that's from the "high point" where sturdiness & reliability are at their peak, rather than fancy capabilities. Further research needed, methinks!Angie - GC Jul 25: £225.85/£500 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0 -
Maryb as my arthritis worsened I decided to go for an electric machine rather than my trusty and much used treadle. It wasn't particularly fancy but I just didn't get on with it and eventually gifted it to my daughter who loves it.
Not having a great time here just now - started some new meds for my arthritis and the side effects just may be worse than the disease :-( feeling gash and hoping it passes - I realised this weekend that i've pinned all my hopes on this new treatment to keep me in work and mobile for a bit longer but suspect I may have "seen" my future and it ain't pretty.

In a SHTF situation you can make a fairly strong disinfectant from a very strong solution of infused THYME, fresh or dried both work well. It doesn't keep for very long so you have to make it up as you need it but if you are without dettol or TCP it is a good stop gap measure I think it was used in sick rooms as it is anti bacterial.0

Four Thieves vinegar is supposed to be strongly anti bacterial, anti viral anti fungal, you name it, and thyme is one of the herbs in that. I didn't know that it lost its efficacy though - would the infusing in vinegar make a difference?
During my youthful Georgette Heyer reading I remember they always used basilicum powder on wounds. Presumably that's dried basil?
WCS I'm so sorry about your latest setback. Hope it is just that - a setback- and you can adjust to this treatmentIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -

Sorry to butt in but NO to square plates
We use them at the restaurant and we lose a couple daily- the corners chip
And ours are heavy duty ones
Also, think of the washing up. Circular bowls are easy to clean, square ones have corners. In work we are always handing them back to the dishwashers0 -
MRSLW, thanks for that tip! I'd not given much thought to basic meds or disinfectants until recently - we don't get ill in the house and thankfully no health issues, but have started stocking up on D3ttol, paracetamol, etc (hidden from the littlies, of course!).
Belated thanks grandma247 for the fabric shop pm - kept meaning to say thanks sooner!
I, too, have round plates, no desire for square ones, but I do covet my mum's early 70s ones - dark brown with a caramel stripe!
Another thing I'm going to stash is wool, whether real or acrylic, as I intend to learn to knit and crochet properly this year, and I agree that being able to rustle up even just a blanket will be a useful skill if we've no heating or money to pay for it! Our CH's been on an hour, only about 55 deg, towels blocking the draughts and it's still Arctic in here!

Love the disinfectant tips! I particularly like things that can be used both to clean and to treat wounds. Unfortunately I react badly to many essential oils when they come in contact with skin--I shall try the Thyme out some time and see how I fare!0
