Life these days is a bit like that with the TV, adverts, magazines, lifestyle coaches,tv cooks, fashion experts, home designers, new models of every artefact, this years colours, the list is endless. All these things attract our attention and take us to 'I must have one of those now!!!' land, and then all our efforts are focused on getting that shiny thing, until the next takes our eye, and that is why people do not recognise that it is not a sustainable way to live life.
I'm a source of amusement to visitors because I have a little lilac 'bedroom' CRT in a corner of the lounge. I do have Sky but only because we have no aerial signal here - and it's the free version. Plus the box is as old as the TV! I don't see any reason to replace while it all works good plus I kinda like not having my living space dominated by a TV. I have a PAYG phone that comes out for occasional car journeys as an emergency tool and that's it. My next door but one neighbour keeps saying 'but I sent you a text'...
I do occasional online TV competitions because I could do with some extra cash but those with a ton of gadgets as prizes leave me cold. It is sometimes difficult though to distinguish between 'I want' and 'I need'. Just lately I've been thinking I could do with some new dinner plates. Nothing wrong with my old ones but they are round and now it seems that plain white square/oblong is the way to go. But to date I've resisted the siren call of plates with corners. I remain deeply unfashionable. :D

:) Heh, Pineapple, I have round plates, and I am, as we all acknowledge, an international leader of style and fashion.:)

Jesting aside, I do see sets of square plates and bowls pretty regularly in the charity shops, which tells me that they aren't as good as they look. Try washing up a bowl with corners.......:p

I find it absolutely hysterical when encountering decor mags at my dentist. I treat them as if I'm an explorer studying the strange customs of an alien culture. This year's wall colours? Oh really? I'm afraid my walls have been the same colour for several years and will be the same colour for several more. I chose colours I happen to like and I don't fall out of love with them because they pass in and out of fashion. Although my curtains (bootsale) have passed in and out of fashion at least twice already. When bitter chocolate brown comes in again, I shall be fashionable once again........:rotfl:

And replacing household stuff not yet worn out on grounds of fashionability? Gawd help us, my ancestors would be rotating in their graves at 180 rpm if I were to succumb to such foolishness. Heck, Nan has the same kitchen table that she had as a newly-wed in 1940, and my table was bought by her for 7 and 6 secondhand in WW2. Prolly late 19th century and will be around long after IKEA's stuff has gone to landfill.

I think the prudent person will look for longlasting quality in furnishings and housewares, not gimcrackery. I believe the Amish buy antique furniture, when they buy it at all. And if heating becomes harder to afford, or erratic, we may well be coveting woollen blankets, jumpers and cosy corduroys.

Right, time for another quick cuppa before w*rk then into the library with my wishlist. Gonna have to order up the Alex Scarrow book as they haven't got it in my branch.

I'm :mad::mad::mad::mad: with the gov and corporations and frustrated by the ignorance and apathy of some people. Because oh and I have health problems we are cash poor, but time rich so spend time and effort on keeping up with current affairs, politics, economics in the uk and worldwide. I have a questioning nature and oh says I have opened his eyes and he too is an information seeker and into prepping as far as we are able.
I think so many people are trying so hard to stay afloat and maintain their existence that the clever marketing people have lead them to believe the only way is to consume. Keeping up with the joneses etc and convincing themselves that they have to have or need something that they cannot afford. We are bombarded by stats and figures that can be manipulated to mean all sorts and unless you have a good understanding of maths and a questioning mind it's easy to be taken in and not to look closer and question. We are told that educational standards have not dropped, but with so many unable to budget and think for themselves I know what I believe. Could this dumbing down all be part of a much larger plan ? (yes I know I sound like a conspiracy nut)

I hate how we are misled and fed bull by those out to shaft us and line their own pockets. Global warming is a joke now referred to as climate change, but the masses don't question why. The economy is far worse than many realise. The media is more propaganda than true news. As for energy it seems that free sources are ignored for those that will be more profitable in the short term. I have never agreed with burning food and growing for energy instead of feeding the hungry.
Fracking has horrendous risks and if you look behind the companies and discover their links with the gov well it's an eye opener. Our water supply is in danger. Nuclear is also a ridiculous idea in my opinion. Too many risks, too much toxic waste and too many cover ups. The ene news website is a good read if you want to know more. Check out whats happening in the US regarding nuclear energy, power stations and leaks and the Louisianna sinkhole, it's truely shocking. People need to value our resources and learn to conserve them because nothing is for ever, but not because of the co2 carp.

Sometimes I feel like I'm watching the world from afar and find whats going on very disturbing. I am neither fit or young enough to make a difference so I do what I can to keep informed and stay prepared for whatever comes my way. I value the small things like the new visiting birdlife in the garden. Homecooking and homegrown. To us a meal out is a bag of chips at the coast, a holiday is a day away from home with a picnic. Quality outweighs quantity.
I wish and hope more people would wake up and see whats happening but when I talk to them I am seen as an alarmist, nuts, weird or crazy.

Sorry rant over :o Thank goodness you peeps are all here to remind me I'm not insane and that prepping is sensible.

Wow! Just my thinking. Long time lurker here, just begining on my prepping journey. great to be among like-minded folk.

    Ps square plates too please!
    Back on the trains again!

  • I have mostly round plates. I have one square small plate, and a couple of octagonal plates which OH had from some dearly departed relative. My goal is to acquire enough mismatched pink and blue plates from CS that it looks intentional. I LOVE reading decorating magazines, but usually because I disapprove of their decorating ideas. At the moment, my favourite pieces are all stamped "petalware" on the back--but when I tried googling it, all that came up was depression glass. I have a rule that unless it is a large or desperately needed piece, I never pay more than £2 for a dish.
As for prepping--I'd better stop reading. I've suddenly got the urge to count my tea lights and put in a SM order for dried goods and go attempt to build a brick oven out of those loose bricks the landlady has stacked up in the back garden. None of these things will get my writing done today so I'd better have a strong word with myself. I will, however, be investing in some more disinfecting supplies after reading about antibiotic resistance this morning. I don't hold much regard for all of those antibacterial soaps on the market and always make it a point to NOT buy them. However, I will get in the old fashioned disinfectants which don't lose their efficacy. Does anyone know if the plain yellow listerine can still be used as a disinfectant? I know it stings like mad, but might be worth keeping some of the branded stuff around if so.

Hello DAVENPORT welcome in to join us, lots of you doing so these days which is very nice. Lots of new slants in thinking and different ideas are just what we need.

Is this the point at which to confess I too have round plates? (Oh the shame!!!) ours were a wedding present from my Dad 35 years ago next Sunday and still going strong. We opted for Denby as they are tough old Ironstone and have over the years collected jugs, casseroles, all the peripheries from E*ay as they became unfashionable and therefore affordable because no one else wanted them any more. So there you go, I'm OUT as a round plate owner and proud to be so!!!!! I know, so sad!!!!!

It's really cold here this morning and we have that rare phenomenon Hampshire Snow, not much of it though, it's the wind that is arctic and our boiler isn't working properly. Why does it always get cold when you have a wonky boiler? never mind the plumber comes tomorrow and hopefully will be able to give the poor old thing a few more years, it's a big old floor standing Potterton Kingfisher and to my knowledge 33 years old, good stuff eh? I'd be devastated to have to replace him as he dries my washing beautifully indoors as he's in the utility room, so a small prayer to the God of Old Boilers will be forthcoming!!! Stay warm today, Cheers Lyn xxx.

FPK I don't know about an oven from the old bricks but you could surely make an outdoor cooker if you could source an old oven grid perhaps from a recycling centre, if you have the bricks you can make a stack to get your fire base off the ground and then build up the sides by a couple of rows and your grid would give you a very useable cooking area like an old fashioned raised hearth. Site it in the most sheltered corner and you'd even be able to make damper bread if you had a dutch oven. It would have the advantage of being easily dismantleable when you move, if you do! Hope that's useful, Lyn xxx.

Ooooer, I do have some square plates... but as they are 80-odd years old & belonged to my great-aunt, I think I may be excused any accusations of pandering to fashion!
It is sometimes difficult though to distinguish between 'I want' and 'I need'.

Someone please make me repeat after them - I do NOT need a Pfaff with 200+ stitches & several alphabets. I DO NOT need another Pfaff. I DO NOT NEED another Pfaff... but I do WANT one! I have several ideas for things that I know would sell well, using those extra stitches that the current one (early 90s model, came to me off Gumtree, brilliant machine) doesn't have, but TBH if TSHTF, the thing would be utterly useless, unlike my trusty old treadles.

How long can I hold out? If I can get to a week, it will probably have passed...

  • Thanks Mrs LW! I shall have a read around and make a go at it--sounds like fun. I suspect there may be an old oven shelf in the shed somewhere leftover from previous tenants. We probably will move at the end of this lease, but doing it once means I'll know how to do it again if necessary.
