Hopefully it is a weather / power shortage problem

Talking of weather, here is the forecast from one of the sources 2T uses - it ain't good
Winter is set to bite back!

Over the past few days we have seen the
weather models show agreement on a very potent cold spell hitting the UK.

This mornings GFS runs shows eye candy for those that love a real potent
cold spell from the East with widespread snow showers.
    ...
Not only does this mornings runs paint a
"possible" significant cold spell of weather it also paints a very snowy one
with what we call troughs (embedded features) in a very cold unstable flow from
the East, this would not only bring frequent snow showers but also organised
areas of heavy snowfall to the North, East, South East and extending inland.

If what the current models are showing for this weekend and in to the start
of next week continue this way and the cold spell comes off there could be some
serious disruption across some parts of the British Isles.

    Day time
maximums of 0 to -3c for many areas based on the latest output.

    Don't
put them winter woollies away yet!
Winter is going to have one last
    word.

Attached to this post is the upper 850 temperature chart which
shows how cold the upper air is, we very rarely see values such as these in the
depth of winter never mind this late in to the year. We are currently
working/modifying these charts so they are easier on the eye.

    Feel free
    to share,
I wanna be in the room where it happens

DS was born 6th May 1994 and we had snow on the ground  and I remember it snowing in June 1975  how strange was that?

  • Hi all
Hope you dont mind me jumping in, I am a long time lurker/reader of this thread and say a HUGE thank you for the fantastic information.
I love my kelly kettle and it does stirling work at the allottment supplying me with tea. The fuel I use it home made paper briquettes dryed in ice cube trays, they burn really well, are free and easy to make. It also saves on shredding all those bills and stuff!
Keep up the good work, you have really changed how I live my life.

Sunshine I think its just brand names - the ghillie kettle that I have appears to be pretty much identical to the kelly kettle, both originated in Ireland. I've used a kelly kettle several times and loved it - when I asked Santa for one of my own he delivered the ghillie:)

edited to add: trying to stay afloat nice to meet you - that's a great idea! I make larger ones to use as firelighters - shall make some smaller ones to try.
  • Thanks for the warm welcome. Now I've been brave and jumped in can I pick your collective brains?
I'm looking at buying some veg seeds for a SHTF scenario but I think I remember that F1 hybrid seeds are no good. What sort should I be buying and how would it be best to store them?
    Thank you

I know several who have bought from here (including me!)

There is info about saving and storage if you scroll down the links on the left.
They sell open pollinated heirloom seeds which you can save.

:wave:Hi Trying to stay afloat, good to see you.

Heirloom variety seeds are best as you can save the seeds.
    Try this company http://www.realseeds.co.uk/
Apparently some of their seeds are not licensed for sale ( those nasty varieties that you don't have to buy new each year are no good for the corporations profits you know;)) so they have a membership scheme but doesn't cost anything just a way to get around the stupid red tape!! And they give advice about seed saving too. Have a mooch around the web I'm sure there a others of a similar vein.

And if you've got the time space and inclination you could try seed saving from F1s sometimes you get lucky.

Started filling up some boxes on top of my kitchen cupboards with extra food stores as my current ones are a bit woeful, but not sure that's an ideal spot as they'll be a bit heavy to get down, hmm... May have to rethink that one.

I've been contemplating my finances, which are not brill. I'm only working part-time and just about covering my outgoings and raising a bit extra with ebay, AVON and the like for those unplanned expenses. I'm kinda ok with that as I think the more you get used to the more you have to lose, not sure that makes sense but it does to me:o
Anyways I have quite substantial debts and although they're mostly 0% now and they've been coming down if the SHTF with interest rates going up I would struggle to pay my mortgage as I'm at the wire now. Soooo... (will get to the point eventually:p) I'm thinking of opting out of the company pension so as to use the extra money to try and bring my debts down. It's a local Govt pension and to be frank I really don't trust that it's still gonna be there in 20 years (or thereabouts) when I retire. It's already been raided to some degree and if things get worse for this country it wouldn't surprise me if that all went belly-up! Just wondered if you lot had any views??
    Cheers,
