  • Hello ALFSMUM we have an aluminium KELLY KETTLE that holds around 1 litre, we've had it for a few years and it works well, stores well over the winter and runs on just about any dry materials you can lay your hands on! I mostly use silver birch twigs as my neighbours boundary is full of mature trees, I just collect twigs once in a while where they fall into our garden. I do have the cooking set and pan support but to be honest the only thing it would be useful for is reheats or scrambled egg. The kettle burns for a short period while it boils the water and gets hot quickly but would be no good for anything that needed long cooking. I love the kettle for making tea in the garden in the summer though, Cheers Lyn.

Each model of Kelly Kettle is available in S/S or aluminium. They are the same size but S/S is a bit heavier. Aluminium can be 'soft' or 'hard' anodised but I am not sure if the Kelly kettle are 'hard' anodised. If you want something to last (ie pass onto future generations) go for S/S every time, even if the aluminium Kelly has 'hard' anodisation!

I think only Kelly make these types of kettle in stainless steel; other manufacturers only make them in aluminium (some with a hard anodised finish). I have not see any titanium versions.

Thank you for the reply. Looking forward to trying one out once we have made our minds up.

A question for the Kelly Kettle users/experts : is stainless steel or aluminium better or about the same? What size do you have and do you have any of the extras I've seen advertised e.g. A stand? Thinking we could try one out at the allotment this year. bound to be plenty of 'natural material' about to feed it!

    Thank you for any advice/suggestions
:) Hi alfsmum, I'll be buying the stainless steel basecamp (largest) model.

The smaller models are more appropriate to backpacking usage where weight and volume are key. I have a little stove which can do that for me. My KK will be ordered direct from their website in the near future.

I was envisaging the KK being used as a back-up source of hot water, not just for teamaking, but for taking the chill off personal wash water, washing dishes, filling a HWB (thinking of elderly friend and neighbour SuperGran who suffers with arthritus and loves her HWBs) as well as the critical resource....tea!

You can also cook rice and pasta by boiling up a pan of water with it in, putting lid on tight and turning power off. My imagination tells me that if you were fast enough, you could achieve something similar by pouring a KK full of boiling water into another pot with rice/ pasta on it.

Just think of the blessing of having hot water in a time of power outage. I was cold-water only for 5 days the other year and the major problem was washing dishes, funnily enough. Hard to get an acceptable level of cleanliness. Of course, if it was SHTF I would have the option of using my paper plates and bowls supply which are stashed against such a need.........

I'm a big fan of stainless steel cookware and will be having the kit in that format, I think for the extra tenner (if you shop on KK's website) it is well worth it. I'm going to push the boat out and get the full kit, plus an extra firebase, as they can burn out over time. I figure to save on the carriage by getting it all at once (have got Xmas money from 3 different sets of relatives to spend).

KK's own website mentions the potential uses of their kettles and Disaster Kits is just one of them.

Have been on the lottie, less than an hour tonight as bit cream-crackered, but worthwhile stuff done. Cycled home just before 6 pm and streetlights still not on. Gorgeous evening.

I was chatting to my army surplus man (they sell new outdoorsy stuff too) and he was telling me that KK is a small family firm and that they tend to do a production run and do the stainless steel for a couple of months, then may do another couple of months on the aluminium. He only had 2 models in at this time of year, neither the one I'm after. He's not expecting more stock of KKs for months, hence my going direct to source.

What this made me consider that if there is a run on this kind of product, due to the leccy suddenly becoming unreliable, for example, you may not be able to get what you want when you want it. All the more reason to plan ahead.

I won't be keeping my KK chastely in a cupboard waiting for a SHTF situation. I see it having a nomadic life on and off the allotment and making tea and possibly anything else I can get it to do. Practice maketh perfect. I shall thoroughly enjoy it.

I got a ghillie kettle for christmas - haven't played with it yet but will use it in the garden for tea. I usually light my chiminea when i'm in the garden and bake potatoes for lunch but am looking forward to making tea with it.

GQ I always have some paper plates stashed - very handy even if only when you're feeling too dire to bother washing dishes.

I trotted off to the Kelly Kettle website last night, remembering that instead of the trip to Chile (cancelled due to exorbitant cost, once everyone decided that maybe they were coming along too) I'm taking the girls and no.3 son camping in France. And I was delighted to find that due to a cosmetic defect, they are selling some models with £10 off, and this included the one I'd long ago decided was most appropriate for us. Needless to say there's one winging its way across the Celtic Sea to us now... I will still take the little "suitcase" burner, but won't worry so much about running out of gas cartridges whilst off the beaten track. They all eat noodles...

Hello GreyQueen and thank you so much for all the info. It's my birthday later this month so I think a KK could be in order :) OH and I were just saying this morning that we need to push on with the allotment this year after a complete wash out last year so the KK will have lots of outings.
