I hate loathe and despise cooking ...but I do wish I had learned the basics. I'm always having to ask people on here how to do this or that. Just the basics, like knowing you have to brown meat first to keep the taste in, how to thicken stock into gravy, stuff like that.

No longer printed I believe but decent copies available second hand. I bought one years ago for a 'can't cook, won't cook' friend and then tracked down a copy for me :T
Been to an Asian supermarket in town to re-stock on spices. Miles cheaper than those little jars in supermarkets - including the own brand refills. I'll be back to stock up on pulses which are also cheaper. I think pulses are essential to long term stocks.
The only downside is the cooking time (even after soaking) so I cook 3 days worth at a time and use the cooked beans etc in different ways in stews, salads or soups.0 -
Ok have saved that ta. I have a lot of lentils and barley - make soup with it. And they come with long use-by dates. I alwys think if I have soup and porridge sorted then I can sustain life lol0

siegemode, perhaps the young person hasn't ever seen lorries bearing the logos of the supermarket chains plying the highways of Blighty. It may be that she thinks that supermarkets miraculously self-reload overnight. Groceries can be streamed via broadband, I'm sure.
I'm middling-cynical and have often wondered whether the careful removal of useful skills from the curriculum to be replaced with useless versions (witness the death of cooking and the rise of food technology) is part of a cunning plan to render the nation incompetant and reliant on bought-in products and services. But perhaps I'm getting a bit "tin hat" in my middle age.
I suspect that people raised on some of the current crop of games would devolve into looters quite handily, but there comes a point when, if we faced a Survivors-type scenario, ther would be nothing edible left to loot. So, those who hadn't thought about homesteading or had thought, and weren't prepared for the hard graft, would face an uncomfortable and hungry future.
Which would quite possibly involve attempting to rob homesteaders, who could well be armed and unwilling to be robbed. Going out for dinner might be the last thing a looter ever did.
The young person is in her 20s and neither bothered about the wider world or what is in her ready meal. The latest mobile or black ops well thats much more intresting !
QUOTE=MrsLurcherwalker;59351357]Morning all, we have a yellow round object in the sky this morning, anyone have an idea what it is??? I read something in folk mythology that it might be the sun, but surely that's just a fairy tale?
GQ may I borrow the tin hat please? I have had that thought many times over the last few years, agree totally about Food Tech taught in schools these days, it was all about shelf life stability and the label and bar code being correct, zilch about cooking and nutritional values. The end event had better happen while us oldies are still around with the knowledge and skills to teach and pass on or it will be a very stick wicket indeed for mankind./QUOTE]
We too have that yellow thing in the sky. Promised ourselves a trip out when it next appeared but feel to exhausted to leave the sofa
When I did food ec they Changed it to food and nutrition after the 3rd year and I didn't take much notice of the theory side at the time, I just wanted to cook.I was forever being told off for tasting and licking spoons :rotfl:Our practical exam was two and a half hrs and had to have everything clean and put away, table laid and food presented. Not sure I'm organised to do it now. It was like a military op. We were given a set of tasks but what we cooked was our choice. Also given a budget tho can't remember what.
TV Dinner, Chicken and ham savoury pancakes.
Sunday tea, Quiche lorraine and Chocolate swiss roll.
Main meal and dessert, Lasagne, salad and pear and ginger upsidedown cake/pud.
I hated theory and skipped most of it, passed on the strength of my practical exam thankfully. Now I am intrested in nutrition I wish I had listened more back then but at least we now have the internet and my collection of books.Butterfly_Brain wrote: »GQ I agree with all you have said and I know that a lot of people will call us paranoid, but I can see a lot of trouble ahead, prices are rising for everything, people are being bullied into slavefare with threats of sanctions, sick and disabled included, wages at the lower end of society suppressed, we have been flooded with cheap immigrant labour so that the big companies can exploit them and the low paid face the likely hood of losing in work benefits when UB comes into force, how are they supposed to live? This country is living under a dictatorship of rich globalists, paranoid or truth?
But I bet the MP's will still award themselves a massive pay rise on top of all their perks such as subsidised bars and restaurants, £300 a day just for turning up a huge salary, cushty pension scheme and £150pw for groceries :mad::mad: And the poor are thrown the scraps in the form of a derisory JSA payment :mad::mad:
I have been adding to my stock at a massive rate and I would advise anyone to do the same and make sure that you know how to live off of the land and can hunt, shoot, prepare your own meat, and be able to cook it. Have a protection plan in place for your home and family as well.
We are indeed living in scary times
Totally agree

Well, after a night of torrential rain, more hail, thunder loud enough to wake the dead and a howling wind complete with screaming mating cats outside.....we had a lovely sunny day and it got to 18 in the sun! I was roasted as I went to the hospital in my chunky jumper..... It has now clouded over and it feels like the storms are coming back again. Great joy.....we had almost two hours with no power last night so the oil lamps came out and it was lovely and cosy in their glow. We got up to a pool of water in the hallway where our water tank had overflowed again ...the tank can't empty the overflow fast enough for the inflow from the torrential rain. We have now emptied the water tank for the fifth time this winter.....we never had to empty it before!
Got to the hospital at nine and saw the orthopedic surgeon at eleven. He checked my x rays then examined my shoulder. He pulled it into position and I told him the joint was still hurting with my arm there and I could feel a click...and he put it back into place without hurting me any more. Back on with the sling for a week and three weeks and I can go back to the gym. He also told me my bone density was excellent and put it down to the weight training...so good news all round. The doctors here may not have the resources (or the wages for that matter) but they certainly have the skills....
My OH bought me a beautiful white orchid growing in a tall vase for Valentine's day and is taking me out to dinner tonight. I collect orchids and bonsai trees, usually ones that are being sold off cheap because of neglect .....but this one is perfect!
Right , off to spray the hot shower onto my aching shoulder....bliss!!!!“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin.” Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC):A0 -
Butterfly you got it all spot on there hunny. I try not to worry but can see a dark road ahead. Luckily the family listen to me and are prepping a little more each week. My supplies are looking good after my AF's order yesterday and Im just off to Mr A for fresh yeast and flour. I have to get the bread making sorted as its my missing link in the battle plan.
I can make almost anything for the house and cook many cheap meals but I can't bl**dy make bread, Im so frustrated by this one vital thing.
Its looking like rain here but otherwise not too bad. They have nearly finished the driveway but to date we have no gates so I have to virtually pull up the drawbridge at the mo :rotfl:Clearing the junk to travel light
Saving every single penny.
I will get my caravan0 -

Got the box set of survivors last tuesday and had watched all 38 episodes by friday night. Really enjoyed it as did oh who hadn't seen it first time round. Certainly food for thought and some great ideas. Havn't been able to get it out of my head since, especially the rats and packs of dogs. It makes you realise that without the knowledge and old skills you wouldn't last long, not forgetting some form of protection and the ability to hunt and forage.
Following the mentions on here I went to look for it on youtube; someone I know who is very much into powering down recommended the last series some time ago as well.
I thought I had seen it but realised from the dates that I rarely had access to a TV in the relevent years! I had seen the first programe in series 1 but certainly not the next 5 and have gone no further. From the synopsis I know I saw a few programmes from series 2 and one or two from series 3! Yet it stuck in my memory all those years. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
