  • You look after yourselves 2T that sounds grim, to put it mildly!!! We're lucky to live down here in the south and have a much milder climate than most other of us, but it's still pretty nippy out there today and currently sleeting. Hope your shoulder is well on the way to recovery and getting progressively less painful for you and hope you have a lovely Valentines Day Dinner at the restaurant tomorrow, take care, Cheers Lyn xxx.

....I got so disgusted by supermarket meat that I went to a local butcher....

Butcher has some unusual cuts like "beast cheeks" or ox cheeks so got some of the beast cheeks to try in a casserole one day.

DH keeps asking if it is much more expensive than the supermarket but think that for the quantity and quality that we get from this butcher that it could work out the same or cheaper and at least we know what we are eating....

I wouldn't know where to find a proper butchers shop, let alone close enough to make it viable.

We've got a place that sells meat for an horrendous price (6 outdoor reared pork chipolatas were £2:17
four YEARS ago!)--they used to keep pigs in the fields nearby--but the cost has put me off. The one local butcher we did have finally sold up about twelve-ish years back when the Big supermarkets moved in & couldn't compete price per lb/kilo & he & his wife went to work in a factory :o

There's a plastic butcher about 8 miles away; all the meat is delivered in vacuum packed lumps & cut into sellable bits, so not a true butchery. I think that's probably the case in a lot of shops now, where the flesh has already been separated from the major bones so to speak, so we still can't be 100% sure it's what it says on the tin

I'd like to taste sweetbreads again, & to buy shin beef for casseroles n pies n things, & proper faggots! And now I feel like I should apply for a job knitting breakfast cereal :rotfl:

I am lucky that the butcher's shop is only about ten minutes walk away and they butcher the meat in front of you, They even bake their own pies and you can see them being topped with pastry ready to go in the oven.

The snow is getting heavier here so enjoying watching it from the window while getting dishes washed and prepping tonights shepherd's pie.

Mardatha, the other thing to check with your Panny is that it is not too near a wall or that one side is near a heat source as that will make it rise unevenly
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!
  • Mar do you not need something that isn't in the tattie family? if you're worried about build of nasties? I know when we had the croft we tried all sorts to keep out the deer etc, but ended up having to put up expensive deer fencing.
We had a problem here with wild goats a couple of years ago - got in one night and ate everything, then set up home under the porch :rotfl:

Its blowing a gale here with snow/hail/sleet, and driving home from work the water is bubbling up out of the manholes and flooding the front street.

Ok well can I do onions? Leeks? y or no lol or I get confused! It's the most horrendous weather here and even the kitchen is a no -go zone.
Mary yes the BM is beside a tiled wall, will that matter?

Mar potato family includes tatties, aubergines, peppers, sweet potatoes and toms, so far as I know - all stuff that won't grow up here uncovered! so you should be fine with leeks etc, although cows may eat the green tops.

Its grim here as well, absolutely freezing
