I too have reserved the lamp at Argos, but am also looking at these http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_10?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=wind+up+lantern&sprefix=wind+up+la%2Caps%2C272
During the last cold spell in december we had to travel up to see fil and just as we set off discovered our screen washer wasn't working. We knew it was topped up as the car had just returned from the garage after a winter check. At first we thought we had a prob with the washer motor but it turned out the screen wash had frozen :eek:. On looking at the screen wash container I found that most are unsuitable for low temps. Ready to use from Tosco says "contains antifreezing properties" on the big front label but on the back in tiny print it says "works well down to -2c" Not impressed. Have now found Bluecol screen wash which claims to be ok down to -36c Cheapest in wilkos

With such low temps forcast it might be worth checking for those with cars. hth
Thanks to all those that post here, I have been given so much food for thought and brilliant ideas. Thanks for the updates about Greece. The BBC ( british B**lsh*t Corporation) cannot be relied upon to tell us the truth or what is really important and we flick between RT, Al Jazeera and you tube for the real news and watch bbc more for amusement than anything else. Have tried to warn parents about the weather and being prepared, but unfortunately as with everything else I have tried to tell them about the news and world affairs etc if the bbc don't report on it then they won't believe me or head a warning. It's so frustrating, I am continually being accused of being an alarmist, conspiracy theorist or just generally being ridiculed. They just ignore our warnings and concern each time, but we keep trying to enlighten/warn them out of a sense of responsibility. Anyone else get this ?
Can't remember who but it was mentioned about glasses some where. I'm also blind as a bat without mine and have 2 pairs by the bed because the cat often knocks them off the side or I do when I reach for them first thing. I need the second pair to find the first pair. I live in fear of being without them and have kept all my old ones and old contacts just in case tshtf.0 -
DD just went into a kitchen cupboard this morning and a pack almost fell out.
She took one look and asked "What the heck is this?"
Answer was " dried leeks for soups - why?""
Turned out it looked like waccy baccy!!:o:rotfl:"This site is addictive!"

Well, it's cold. -18 was our high today. My windshield washing fluid and anti-freeze are good to -45C. Coldest, I remember was -42, we beat Siberia that day.
Uhm, the good stuff over here is often in bud form (aka BC Bud, a prime cash crop). A patient left it in the exam room. Dr. didn't know if it was a tip or forgotten!0 -

Just to say that OH was in the army in Germany and they routinely used cheap vodka in their screen wash. Did cause a problem when he got stopped at customs for drunk driving! He wasn't but customs officer could smell booze! He was rescued by a more experienced customs officer!!Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx
March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.0 -
Oh yes the good old frozen screen wash, cheap vodka does work very well. Checked mine and allegedly ok to -15oC it's the ice formation due to wind effect that is a problem!
Off to stock up on a few bits for Mr T and Mr S

in this country it often is, in the states it's normally something that might look a bit like dried leeks
and no, i'm not one who partakes in it but in my youth i knew those who did
btw, burning bay leaves smells a lot like waccy baccy smell, i had a lot of pagan friends that used it for purification purposes (bay leaves!) i noted this as i personally like the smell, just not the effect of waccy baccy0 -
Hello all
Phew, I go to work for a few days, & there's 5 pages to catch up!
Thanks for the ideas/tips, keep them coming...
We've stocked up too, mostly tinned, loads of bread, and OH had the fire going this weekend kicks out fantastic heat from the m-f stove.
Just in time, we were walking the DDog in the snow this morning, she loved it, and we were well wrapped up in the cheap ski hats and gloves, and thermals. Although she is now sleeping her walk off!
Feels good to be prepared for this weather - however the sweet/chocolate rations are nearly gone, but, we are supposed to be dieting! Actually lost 3lbs in 3 days from two 16 hour days and working Saturday night!
Keep warm, keep safe, keep stocked up, sharpen your pencils, and don't forget your shovels....
