I treated myself to a paid for subscription for January from Piers Corbyn and if it pans out I will subscribe for a year. The first 7 days of January didn't really tally with the weather here in London but we are now in his third period and it seems to be spot on. Considering he forecast this in mid December that's pretty good. If the rest of the month pans out, I'll be convincedIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0

It was freezing here first thing but then it clouded over and we got to the dizzy heights of 12 degrees, which felt like summer after the last few days. I had to resort to taking some layers off and open the car window to cool off a bit lol. It is now pouring with rain but at least its a bit warmer.
Went shopping this morning just in case the extreme cold comes back, which I think it will in a few days time. You have my utmost sympathy as I think this weather is going to be horrendous in the UK. I do think the tv and press have been playing it down so far. I have been trying to convince my mother in law to stock up and telling her how bad its going to be but unless they scare her on the BBC she thinks its not going to happen.....glad she is in sheltered housing so they can keep an eye on her if the going gets rough. She is used to having the house extremely hot....it suffocates me when I go and visit as she has it turned up full all the time...its like a furnace!
I read two scary reports today, one said that the Aegean has had 117 quakes in the last 36 hours around where the big one was the other day. The other report said that Vesuvius is now throwing out a lot of lava and they are worried about a major eruption. Let's hope nothing else happens as Greece is in enough trouble as it is!
If I had to sit out the deep freeze in the UK that is forecast I would have some big stocks of sweeties and goodies I like and lots of fruit in. Nothing worse than getting stuck in the house and getting an urgent craving for something you MUST have immediately! Having said that, I was going to allow myself a nice bit of chocolate today and I DIDN'T LIKE IT!!!!!!!!! I can't believe it, it tasted greasy and cheap and horrible and I couldn't eat the one little piece I took off the bar. It is now in the freezer to melt down for covering cake...but I will add something to make it taste better lol.
Got a fur trapper hat today....if you can't beat them , join them. In all fairness, it looked a damn sight better than the woolly beanie hat I tried on before it. It will at least keep me warm and it has two nice bobbles that hang down for decoration. They were selling like hot cakes as everyone thinks the extreme cold is going to come back here in a few days time. I also got a new pair of leather gloves as mine ripped when I was getting the logs in.....better them ripping than my hand though. I have darned the old pair and will use them for wood moving in the future.
I also got some lovely woollen tights at the Chinese shop for just 3 euros....cheaper than Lidl's offers and they fit better on my long legs. For someone just 5.4 I have really long legs and arms and a short torso. Most frustrating when I try to get a fitted jacket. The healthy eating is going well, I now have a dark chocolate eating allowance each day. Stay warm and safe everyone!“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin.” Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC):A0 -

But Lindt does a nice extra creamy milk and Aldi sells one that I like too.0 -
I'm not keen on chocolate, but jellybabies would never live long enough to make a stash in this house!0

mmm lots of weather talk but I don't think we're expecting the snow here - the BBC are saying zero degrees but nothing like down south - isn't it odd??? Would love some snow - its dark and dismal here.
Shall check out those books - I'm reading Stitching for Victory - really interesting!
Not been feeling great this week, sore throat/cold-wise so work has been a struggle but starting to pick up again now. GQ well done on the weight loss - i'm needing some more clothes but if I could drop a few pounds i'd have loads again - cannot decide whether to make a couple of things to boost my shabby looking wardrobe or just wait a month or two and hope my "self control" shows results. I'm trying hard to up my exercise a little and eat sensibly to see if it helps my arthritis any.

And I've just bought a book called 'Spade among the rushes' by Margaret Leigh. About a lady who describes her attempts to transform a deserted croft in the Highlands of Scotland into a home and to get the wilderness growing again.
Smirisary is the location. Was during the war years. Havn't read it yet but a quick flick through and it seems promising. I got the book from E*bay, Mardatha might be interested?
Thanks Pennib - our local library only has 'Harvest of the Moor' which is her account of living off the land in Cornwall.
I'm sure it will prove an interesting read none-the-less so thank you for the 'introduction' to an author that I would otherwise of missed.

He he, 2tonsils, you have joined the not-so-secret society of the trapper hat wearers. The mockers will be laughing on the other side of their chillblains when the arctic weather comes.
Went out this evening about 5 pm and came back in just before 9 pm and it's getting very cold out there, just above freezing at the mo with a nasty spitty hard little rain, sort of like it's trying for sleet or hail but hasn't quite got there yet.
Well, have tried talking to Mum earlier today about the incoming bad weather. She pooh-poohed it and said it wouldn't be that bad. I was trying to suggest some UHT milk, breadflour and yeast so that she had the essentials and wouldn't have to toil the 3/4 to the supermarket with snow/ ice on the ground, even though they all have YaxTrax, courtesy of me a couple of Xmasses ago.
 Well, you can but try. If it does go bad, I shall be emailing my brother (he lives with our parents) on the sly and telling him to do the shopping and errand-running. Mum's DEXA scans have revealed that the drug therapy she's on as part of her cancer treatment have thinned her bones from very good down to fracture risk in a year and I'm very concerned about her falling on ice.
Arrgghhh, it's so frustrating when people won't entertain the possibilty of a big freeze-up. The parents have very good memories of the severe winter of 62-63 and although they were alive in 1947 they were too young to remember that severe winter. They can remember sweeties coming off the ration, though, Mar!
Scary news about Vesuvius, really really hope none of the European volcanoes erupts, the population density around them makes it beyond scary.
Keep warm and keep well, people.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I heard a scary story from two different reliable sources here yesterday. It seems in the North of the island (where most of the break ins have been) someone broke into a house while the family were sleeping and used some kind of gas to make them sleep through being robbed. Apparently there was a very young baby involved as well and the gas was used on the baby as well as the adults. It's very scary to think that things have got that bad here. I am now glad we have thought about protecting ourselves should we feel threatened and we have looked for weak spots in our home security and tightened it up.
you sure that's not an urban myth?

Just going back to chocolate for a mo - I really am going to have to try to store some and ration myself.
It's medicinal innit! :T
