I was born in 1945 and when I was about 8 or 9 My Grandad had a cousin who visited once a year (she lived in the Cotswolds).
We were 3 girls and when she visited she would either give us 10/- or £1 between us. We knew immediately that for the 10/- we would have 3shillings and 4 pence each or obviously if it was a £1 we would have 6shillings and 8 pence each. Can you imagine the excitement, we never had so much money, our pocket money was sixpence. We regarded her as a rich relative

Hello Bob I've missed ya .
My memory of D Day - Feb 1971 iirc when the 50p coin made it's appearance was of being first time young mum of a sixth month son with colic who screamed round the clock for an entire year . I was expecting second baby and recall clutching my very loud red faced child to my expanding stomach in agony with backache and longing for the loo. Brain couldn't cope butcher fetched a chair his wife put the kettle on took the baby directed me to their bathroom and gave me tea and biscuits and a hug . When I got my shopping home he had written out an easy chart and totted the bill and put a large piece of fillet steak in with my order . Lovely days and lovely people -bless them .
Bob that's a brilliant guide . My two favourite coins were always the silver thruppeny ( that's what we called them ) bit and the silver sixpence. My godmother gave me both and full and half sovereigns .All predated my birth by many years -may have been a family heirloom I still have the thruppeny a lovely boyfriend in my late teens made my sixpence into a ring with a silver mount ( anyone remember them? ) and I kept that too . Alas all the sovereigns fetched a pretty good price and helped pay the mortgage when toxic husband was sent on his way and I thank them and late godmother because they made a difference in hard times .

I hope you weren't holding onto that Churchill crown in the hope that it'd be worth something one day. They made 30 million of them and they're worth today exactly what they were sold for new in the sixties; 25p.
Of course, the spending power of 25p vs 25d is much much less.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Having received requests to close and open various threads, it seems i can't please everyone. (edited to add - i would love to be able to but just don't know how)
Can we all just post in the threads we like and leave other threads for others who appreciate them?
Hope this is ok. If anyone is unhappy with this please refer to the forum team
Kindest regards, Zip
