we usually do have exit polls Mila for ordinary elections but because this is a referendum the polling organisations have decided its too difficult to make projections from a poll

:rotfl: The Washington Post got it wrong as to why there will be no exit polls. They think it's the law.

 :p Wow, that was a bit hairy!

Had to disappear in a hurry for a while as the storm went ballistic and I was worried I'd get my router etc fried. Fast shutdown of PC and unplugged everything electical related to it as thunder rolled and lightning flashed.

Judging by the squeals from out on the street, some people were out there in the waterfall level rain. At least it's cleared the air which has been horribly, debilitatingly humid all day.

Right, matters preptastic learned; my heavy blockboard pooter desk is very close to the wall which means pulling plugs is fiddly and slower than ideal. It needs to be a few inches further out for speed, which will mean something else will need to be re-positoned slightly.

Also, it's very dark up that corner. I was able to have the main light on, but I need one of my torches permanantly to hand, in case I have to do that in a powercut. Having labels on all the plugs was helpful, tho.

The flat nearly flooded, so I did two things; retrieved the wellies from where they live on the high shelf in the bike shed about 10 yards away outside before the walkway went entirely underwater. I had been contemplating purchasing a sturdy yard broom, like the one I keep on the allotment, to have down here. Definately think that would come in handy so will source that in the next day or so.

Also removed the few things which live on the floor of the nearest cupboard to the front door. The few newspapers need to be carrier-bagged for speed, and now are. I also need to look at sitting the wicker hamper in the bottom of the airing cupboard in a plastic bag, to prevent water damage. The other thing on the floor in there is in a shopping bag which is pretty waterproof, and would be a cinch to move in two seconds.

All in all, a useful little training exercise.

:) The thunder and lightning bit is over and it's just raining heavily as opposed to having water fall outta the sky like someone up there was emptying a bathtub. Thanks for the well-wishes.

Bygorry, my potatoes are definately going to be effing potatoes this year, with all this rain. I expect the waterbutts are slopping over the top again, it just doesn't know how to stop, does it?

So glad I don't have to get booted and suited and struggle down to the polling station, which is half a mile away. Wonder how many folks are getting wet tonight doing just that?

It's good to be home when this kind of rain falls. When we got downpours at my last flat (a sub-basement) I used to have to go out with a bucket and bail myself out. Never had it happen whilst I was out and about but it would have been interesting.

I mean, the potential financial losses in floor-covering at that address were stratospheric - I spent a whole £20 on that carpet remnant. :D

Good grief, GQ! Glad you're safe, but there doesn't sound like there was much leeway until you were flooded. I think about that sometimes - I'm near the foot of a long, steepish hill a couple of hundred yards long, but the house itself is on a little rise, which means I'd get a little bit of notice if there was flooding locally. I do wonder, "what would I save", as I have an upstairs I could retreat to.

I hope the worst is past for you, anyway.

GQ I have a surge protected extension socket with an on/off switch on my desk into which my pooter and peripherals are all plugged, which means I can switch off everything very easily. It's by Belkin and wasn't hugely expensive. I use it to switch everything off when I shut down for the night to save Lectrickery. But in my mind I was always vaguely comforted by the fact it has a surge protector so thought it would stop things being fried

We need Nuatha to say whether that is actually effective or not - Yoohoo!!??

I voted at 8:00 tonight on the way home from work, and the staff at the polling station said they had been very busy today, in fact, one said she had never known anything like it before. Wish people could be as enthusiastic during general elections!

It is the law that no polls can be published before voting finishes - and of course we only have one time zone.

But the hedge funds and banks are commissioning their own private exit polls and will be very busy tonight placing all sorts of trades. Anyone who thought the City would be annihilated by Brexit obviously underestimates the 'animal spirits' of its denizens

The City will be fine either way, damn them. They always are

:) I will be very interested to see the % turnout here. I know what it is for general and local elections here and want to see if it's comparable to the former or exceeds it.

Just spoken to SuperGran. The groundfloor flats on The Far Side (pun intended) nearly went underwater. A public-spirited neighbour went out and got very wet poking around in a drain with a stick to help the water away more quickly.

Righty, going to put the pooter to bed and then read for a while before putting myself to bed. See ya on the other side. GQ xx
