:( Yup. Immediately in most cases.

Also fun things happening like us renting a flat to one person who co-incidentally has about four other adults move in with them. The one person is often not working and having their rent paid for them, and their friends who are just staying a short while according to them (very hard to prove otherwise with restrictions on fraud investigation) are living scot-free and able to work cheaply and undercut the wages of those who are running their own households and paying their own way.

Oh, and the noise and the stench from the overcrowded flats (you can tell I've had personal experience of this, can't you?) is vile and horrible for the neighbours. I really do think this country is being taken advantage of and that we must be a pan-European laughing-stock. And the social housing issue is just one of the reasons I've already voted Brexit.

The exact same thing is happening with my brothers upstairs neighbour. However all involved are local to the area and uk nationals.

:( Yeah, I see that, too. Nothing but out-and-out fraud, isn't it?

And I'm a very happy bunny; 5 x 1.5l Ravenhead Kilner jars, £4 each from a local charity shop. More than I'd wanted to pay, but after weeks of searching, I've realised that you almost never see that size. I can face TEOTW quite happily if I have plenty of Kimchi & water-kefir!

:T Nice one, thriftwizard. I get all my Le Parfait jars from chazzers and it's a happy day when I've added to the inventory.

Is it possible that personal opinions are not allowed on this thread any longer?

Is it possible that we have an interpreter who knows what I am trying to say rather better than I do?

Is it possible that I am seen as a doddering old lady who needs to have the world and its workings explained in minute and easily understood words and detail?

I only ask as I would be extremely loath to continue posting here if it is!

If that becomes the case, I won't be posting either.
If I'm unsure what someone is saying I'll ask.
If I misunderstand what is said I would expect to be corrected.
I expect the same approach, taking my words out of context or reinterpreting them is not acceptable - if I haven't been clear and feel I've been misinterpreted then I will seek to clarify my intent.
Equally, if I'm not clear or you want my opinion feel free to ask questions - though I reserve the right to answer as I see fit ;)
  • Thanks NUATHA and thanks to everyone who has sent me messages this afternoon, bless all of you, I'm not put out or upset by anyones posts at all, none of you have upset me by what you've posted and I was just being an old grumpy boots! I think a misunderstanding has been cleared up and I hope we can put this down and go on to something else. No one has posted anything they shouldn't have and no one has said anything to make me cross or upset, you're all lovely!!!
  • What a useful tool the internet is, I've had a series of photos on the phone from DD1 who is visiting a friends new garden and there were some easily identifiable plants and some I've had to really search for but there is only one I've not been able to get. I've found a Persicaria Microcephala called Red Dragon and what I think is a Pawlonia (Foxglove Tree) tree but the specific species I'm not able to identify as it's not in flower at the moment. How difficult life would be if the internet was down I really think you can find anything in the world if you ask the right question!

I hope no one has misunderstood me and I would hate anyone to think that I don't think refugees should be entitled to help. My own grandfather was a refugee fleeing the country of his birth in well founded fear for his life.

Grey Queen's post about multiple occupancy seemed to be in the context of Eastern European single individuals (not refugees) being granted a tenancy of a one person council flat which I can't understand Because they can't have been on the waiting list or (assuming they don't qualify as vulnerable for other reasons) have enough points to give them priority over other applicants for social housing.
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

:(maryb, I don't talk about refugees, they are in a very different situation. I do know some of the methods being used to game the system and I'm not going to post about them because I don't want anyone who'd be interested in trying it on getting helpful information to make them better at it.:(

Bearing in mind that there are Brits who've been trying to get social housing in their home areas for 20+ years, I'd think it reasonable that economic migrants from EU countires face an extended embargo on their ability to apply for social housing. Such as perhaps having to have had a 20 year history of working and contributing through taxation in the UK before you can even apply to a waiting list.

I didn't think think you (or GQ) were referring to refugees, or in any way implying that refugees shouldn't be helped.

Though I'll admit to being curious, I appreciate you not spreading details of the techniques used - though I suspect they are findable online.

I believe the criteria should be fair all round.
I know that as a couple with no children there was no help available when Herself and I lost our home because the landlord refused to maintain it and it was not legally habitable, fortunately we were able to find a private let out of the area and then buy back into the area we had been living in.
Ironically we bought an ex-council house.

This afternoon I heard of a change in a local authority's housing policy. When asking what your connection to the area is, they specifically ask for current and previous family connections, even down to what family are in which cemetery, hopefully this means that what little social housing is left in that area will go to locals.

With the Government now threatening to force what are actually private landlords to sell their housing stock the supply of affordable housing is going to shrink even more rapidly. I can see that HMOs and capsule hotels are going to become the housing norm - another Victorian value that's being resurrected.
