BTW, on the subject of girlfriends, I'm so pleased I didn't dump the girl who was late on Valentines day.
We have such fun together, and recently celebrated our 6 month anniversary. Thanks for all your advice.0 -
I watched Judge Judy the other week. It must have been a boring day. Did you know that no houses in the US are burgled. No, not one. Many however are (wait for it) ..................BURGLARISED.
What fun. Today I have rendered my bedding WASHISED. I am about to make sure that they are IRONISED. Tomorrow I have a friend coming over so I will be VISITISED.
The possibilities are endless.
xI hope mila isn't feeling too leg-pulled. Burglarised has always amused me, too.
Please don't be tempted to ironise, monna, anything involving bits of metal attached to an electical supply is obviously a dangerous trade which should be reserved for those with suitable training, protective gear and, possibly, a death wish.
Hokay, really must put this pooter to bed or I will be too pie-eyed to work tomorrow. More elections stuff - aaaarrrggghhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

One Americanism I've never understood.
In America, the shortened version of "mathematics" is "math".
Surely it should be (as we say it here in the UK) "maths", with an S?
If the full length word has an S, shouldn't the shortened version have an S too?0 -

Just keep thinking... it's nearly over.
Are you working the day? That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

If you've ordered but not yet received the recliner, can you cancel it and buy the BHF one?
I agree they have some lovely stuff in the one near me - just need a bigger house! That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

May I ask you all about something that I've been seriously thinking about? Do people here use cash only for purchases or just cards, or a mixture? Don't answer if the question makes you uncomfortable.
Thank you everyone, I've thought hard after reading your comments and I've decided to take the housekeeping out in cash weekly, and leave my cards at home next month. I'll see if it leads to significant savings as I suspect it may do. I'm keeping all receipts too. I need to be much clearer about where the money's going.
I don't use cheques ( or checks) at all. I do use online banking, and pay all bills either at the bank or by direct debit or standing order. But I've just been looking at my bank statements online, and have de-registered my debit and credit cards on various sites. It's far, far too easy to click a button and buy things you don't really need - at least I find it is - and reading Greyqueens comments has made me very conscious of the paper trail I'm leaving.
I've been wondering about store 'loyalty' cards as well. Think I'm going to leave them at home as well for a month. I'm not convinced that the benefits outweigh the issue of the information about yourself you give the store every time you use one?0 -

We pronounce nuclear differently? (And aluminum correctly)
All your comments have made me smile. What an exceptional group of fun nice people.
I did ask someone to explain revise to me and found out it is our term for study. Not sure why we shortened to math and not maths. Oh and I've always been confused by Brits saying "in hospital" instead of "in the hospital"
You have a much lovelier way with writing than most of us, and a very funny sense of humor!
It's true we seldom use street or road after the name. I will tell you I live on Country Club and my daughter lives on Gonzales. In actuality I live on Country Club Circle and she lives on Gonzales Rd. That's a very common thing we all seems to do. I just never realized it before.
Thanks GQ for so much info on different terms that we use for things. That was fun to read!!Overprepare, then go with the flow.

nuke – you – lerr
new – clee – err
Revise means 'reconsider' or 'review' - which is why it's come to means study.
Though, to be honest, I could care less.
*cough*That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

Morning all.
NewShadow, I'm working my regular job on referendum day but not working as a polling clerk or on the count. Several members of my team do one or either of those roles, but only a limited amount of us can do it as we still have to provide a front-facing service to the public. You on any election duties?
Every time I patch a caller through to the elections office, the poor beggars sound more harried. I think that on the weekend after the 23rd, they'll be retreating into a darkened room and crying with exhaustion. I'm pretty ticked off at all the nitwits who either didn't bother registering to vote until the last minute, or who neglected to look at their holiday dates vs the referendum date and realise they had a problem until the last minute - it is they who are creating shedloads of extra work.
mila, there are other amusing inconsistancies between the UK and US versions of English. Maths/ math is one, we also say pair of scissors and when we say someone is p i s s ed, we mean they are drunk. When we mean that they are a tad unhappy, we would say p i s s e d off.
Also, the phrase I could care less in the US is nonsensical to us as we'd say I couldn't care less to mean the same thing.
There will be others but I have just rolled out of bed and haven't had enough tea to function properly.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.
