For those of you who don't online bank, how do you pay bills? Many of our bills are not in our little town and would have to be mailed. I'm assuming you do not use checks as this is a paper trail. So what do you use to pay bills that aren't direct debit and must be posted to a distant city?

I use dd for regular bills and cheques for payments that need posting and cash where possible. I just like to know what's going out of our account.

The other thing I like about leaving *something* of a paper trail by online shopping etc - I live in terror of being audited by HMRC and trying to explain that yes, my income really is this small, I really don't do any activities you can't trace, and when I pay for stuff by a card - a train ticket to the next town, for instance - I prove that I'm not sunning myself on a beach in the Caribbean or something. Thats my hope, anyway ....

Mila In the UK you can pay some bills at your local Post Office.

Benefits are obtained from the Post Office, you have a card like a debit card which you use to withdraw the benefit

    Standing order.

I can't think of a single bill that I don't pay either then and there in cash (in the shop or to the tradesman), or via either dd or SO.

Utilities, water, tax, internet - dd

    Rent - SO

Food, clothes, plumber, etc - cash

eBay - paypal or cash on collection/delivery

What kind of things do you pay with using a cheque?
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

I use cheques for payments to school ( I don't want to give the school my bank details for parent pay) and not happy sending envelopes of cash with a teenager as they could get lost or stolen before being handed In as he often forgets and leaves things in his bag for days. or things like our holiday or if I buy plants etc from catalogues.

For those of you who don't online bank, how do you pay bills?

Main household bills (Rent, CT, Water and Energy) are paid in cash, at a Paypoint outlet.

Car Insurance is paid annually, by phone, using a pre-paid Debit Card. *

VED is paid annually, in cash, over the PO counter.

Contents Insurance is one of a very few, which is paid by DD.

    * I also use the Pre-paid Debit card for online purchases, thereby keeping my online purchases isolated from my bank account.

I use checks for yearly or by-yearly payments such as life insurance premiums. In the US every transaction either online or check goes through the Federal reserve. So either way there is a record...no difference. The only way around this would be to use money orders that can be bought with cash at convenenice stores. You name is not recorded.
I just go ahead and use online banking, checks and DD. I have made the same payments for so many years that it's pretty well set in stone. Nothing new to be flagged.

p.s. I love seeing the differences in how our two nations spell the same word. i.e. check--cheque
My American spell checker on this computer tried to change the spelling when I typed in the way this word is spelled in the UK.:)

You can also use your bank debit card to withdraw cash from your bank account at the Post Office
