Greyqueen that was an amazing post, thank you!

Well, the rolling electric cuts start from tonight so I have got my OH busy filling the oil lamps with oil and trying them out to see if they work okay and don't leak. Have checked out all the other supplies as well. The freezers are full to the brim so should be okay, both guaranteed to 48 hours to stay pretty well frozen if you don't keep opening them to have a look...

I went to the gym and spread the news about the electric strikes to my friends there....only lady said she wasn't bothered as long as the shops stayed open so I pointed out they can't operate the tills without power and they wouldn't be able to shop in the dark either.....and that the petrol stations won't be open as the pumps won't work either...she looked a bit crestfallen at that as she had obviously not thought of it. My other friend thanked me for telling him as he lives out in the wilds on top of a mountain and it would have been truly creepy and pitch black up there.I have also put a message on the local forum who were really rude to me before for putting warnings on and I got four messages saying thank you to me from people with children who will be affected by the long power cuts , which cheered me up a lot.

Last night , after helping out on some of the New Jersey weather forums I got to thinking about having food supplies in (as you do..). It struck me how many people bought just enough for one day even though they knew the storm was going to be a big one and leave them without power...and the fact that many bought food that was not nutritious and often bought beer and alcohol. While I appreciate some would find it a comfort to have beer in, it doesn't help when you are in an emergency situation and may have to think quickly and make important decisions about your safety and that of those around you. Having a beer muddled brain would not help! If someone I depended on let me down in a real emergency situation because they had been drinking I would be absolutely furious at them being so selfish......luckily my OH knows my opinions on this and actually agrees with me!

I can see the need for some comfort foods though if you are prepping, I think the ones with sponge pudding in tins and ready made custard are very wise . Not only comfort food but full of calories as well which you may need to keep warm enough. Bags of rice and tinned tomato may be great for creating meals but you are certain to crave comfort foods if you are holed up for any amount of time. So I am going to find room for nuts, chocolate, protein bars (already have the powder) and things like hot chocolate drinks for me and Horlicks for my OH. I am also going to build up a little store of my hm gluten free biscuits and bread (which are nutritious and taste lovely).

Got a very grey, miserable day here today. It keep hissing down with rain but its still a very warm 28 degrees.Very strange for this time of year. I have to go for my scan tonight, hope the power is on at the office! I have just finished charging my phone, solar torch, lap top and Kobo reader. I am going to call at the store and get a cheap battery radio to use if the power is off...it feels so much more cheerful with a good bit of music on ;)

Love reading your updates...keep up the good work my fellow preppers!

Absolutely Mardatha.....you will need the calories for all the extra physical activity and to keep your spirits up..make mine a gluten free sticky toffee pudding...mmmmmmmm

The new storm off the East coast of America is deepening and is starting to look real nasty now, just hope they stay safe and warm enough. I just heard about one area that is being closed off for 7-8 months, with only quick visits by appointment to collect essentials, no stays and no visiting others while you are there. The gas mains are so badly damaged they need to be totally replaced before anyone can go back. Terrible for the people involved. It's been five days now and some have still not had any help at all...it must feel like a lifetime of waiting. The awful thing is that if the new storm strikes they may not be able to continue to send out aid as people will be cut off again and it may be too hazardous for rescue helpers to go in handing out aid. What a nightmare situation to have to deal with. It makes me very grateful that my own situation is no worse than it is at the moment.

I do realise thought that I am more of a survivalist than most. I think my tough childhood had a lot to do with that. I have hardly had an easy life here (people just think you do with living in a beautiful place)...its quite hard physically in the winter months, shifting wood, gas bottles, dealing with floods, earth tremors, storms, lack of water and electric and umpteen other things that regularly happen in the winter once the tourists leave.

I do feel people get used to the modern lifestyle and all the things it brings like easy laundry, ready made meals and instant entertainment. I am beginning to wonder if it takes away some of the survival instinct and brings on (as someone said before on this thread) the feeling that someone will come and save you and make everything better again. The sad fact is that most governments and their departments wouldn't give a damn about you....and unlike the movies, Arnie and Van Damme are not going to appear to save you at the last minute or fight off the thugs from the next city who are after your last bit of cake.

  • 2T would Arnie not come if it was known you had a huge stash of tinned puddings and custard? Surely that would constitute an irresistable draw? Hope so, stay warm, stay safe, Cheers Lyn x.

MAR - You'd better make room next to Peter in your shed, just in case you get Arnie if he doesn't go to Greece!!!!! Lyn xxx.
