  • ...and there's the "tin hat" thought for the day. I've clicked, by now, that the blimmin' adverts that come up when I view some web pages tend to be triggered by whatever I've been viewing on Am*zon. Howsomever, after reading yesterday's comments re tealights and their holders on here - I'm now frequently getting adverts for that coming up too - and I've not been reading about them anywhere else.

Shades of Jaws music...... Have "they" got cookies picking up what we are reading about on here...
  • ...and the weird poll result for the day - ie thinking people would be influenced by what part of the country they live in.....

That's even odder than thinking people would be influenced by personal factors such as their income...

Candles just are not cheap - and if we ever do get powercuts then the price will rise fast. I think solar lights are probably the way to go. I've got this house sorted so that we can manage fine without elect for a while - only thing that would seriously bug me is no internet but then I've got a houseful of books. We'd need to keep running off hot water though, as the pump for radiators wouldn't work. Probably have a big deep bath each every night and do a washing as well. Good job we don't pay for water like you down south eh!!

This might interest you guys. I just posted this to landlordzone, but might be a relevant SHTF topic also:

I just spent a week trying to get a 25 year old close coupled toilet apart. The wing nuts under the cistern were rusted because no plumbers mait was used on the syphon, so I think it has been dripping water on them all that time. I even filled two Actimel bottles with engine oil and taped these over the nuts for two days, but it did not help. In the end I had to use a Bosch Multitool to cut off the bolts.

However, this item looks like it eliminates the need to take the toilet apart when you need to repair it:

There's nothing odd about correlation of information. It's a you gov poll that is all. They are well known for profiling the nation. Their choice of colours is a subtle message to the lower middle class audience of daily mail. Red = danger. It's a snapshot of opinion throughout the country. I don't think it says that people would be influenced by where they live, I think it says that the people asked gave these opinions and this is where they live. Of course it's all down to interpretation and some are able to take such things with a pinch of salt while others read further into it or take in the subtle messages that are intended to sway opinion in order to get the conclusion that the provider wants.

There's nothing odd at all thinking that people would be influenced by their personal circumstances and in my opinion people should base their thoughts on what has happened, how EU effects them now and how they are likely to be effected in the future.

What I take exception to is massive generalisations based upon class. Anyone who does that is falling into the hands of the powers that be and are allowing themselves to be pawns in a big game.
  • What I find vaguely insulting in all the political persuasions being used from both the 'stay in' and 'come out' of the EU camps is the impression that we NEED to be told which way we should be veering because we're all so very out of touch with the reality of the situation. Whilst appreciating that lots of the advice is well intentioned I am perfectly capable of making my own assessment of the situation and competent to make my own decision as to what I vote. No political 'muscle' from either side of the debate towards me 'Joe Public' or the other side will influence my decision. I'm an individual, I can think, I can MAKE UP MY OWN MIND and live with the result of the decision that I make!

Too true Lyn. I suppose we can't be cross at TPTB for thinking like that. We have so many in our society that expect to have everything laid out for them, expect to be informed about all insundry and expect to have someone higher up to foot the issues when our self centred members of society don't get their own way.

With that attitude on life I can see how TPTB think that the general public need to be informed and supported in making a decision.

    And/or oil lamps.

They have the advantages, over candles, of putting out a great deal of light, and a not inconsiderable amount of heat.
  • But you still have to be able to get the lamp oil to run them on, solar, once it's bought is relatively self sufficient. I know you still have to have the availability of rechargeable batteries and a solar charger but you'd use that much less frequently than you'd have to refill oil lamps.

Talk about an eye to the future, He Who Knows took some rubbish to a friends house this morning as they have room in a skip they've got on the drive and has come home with a trailer full of logs!!! Someone a couple of doors away from the friend was taking down a tree so He Who Knows asked and they said PLEASE take them away, it will save us the job! Ask and if they say NO you're no worse off then if you hadn't asked at all! Cheeky but profitable!

Also lamp oil and candle wax pollute the air you are trying to breathe... solar is cleaner.
