THRIFTWIZARD I totally agree that if someone is spreading rumour and falsehoods you have to tackle it head on and nip it in the bud before it starts to fester. It doesn't take much to have folk start talking about no smoke without fire does it. We've been in that situation to a degree with the landlord of one of our village pubs. We did the quiz there regularly for years and he was happy to receive lots of our surplus crops which helped in the pub kitchen when we had gluts of things. A situation occurred which my brother who was part of our quiz team saw and he said he wouldn't be doing the quiz any longer. The next time we went in, knowing nothing of what had been said we were broadsided and the landlord had 'never been so insulted in his life' and we were made aware in no uncertain terms that we were not welcome! We got details from my brother, He Who Knows went to see the landlord and explained we didn't know anything about it so how were we at fault? and they made a kind of peace. I have people to this day ask me why we don't go any more and what happened, my decision is never to set foot again in that place and I tell them the truth, we've not suffered, the pub hasn't suffered and the landlord tries to speak when he sees me, I just cross the road. Action when needed yes, but peaceful conclusions are preferable for me to outright warfare, we've lived here a long time and hope to continue to do so in a contented and peaceful way, so much nicer than angst.0

thriftwizard's right, loose talk by the ignorant can dramatically effect people's lives.
We've had some very nasty episodes here when the ignorant have gone around bad-mouthing people in their neighbourhood as a form of revenge for imagined slights, accusations of unsavoury interests in children being directed at blameless individuals who work in schools etc. People have had to be spoken to by the Police very strongly and told not to spread these slanders, but many people feel that there is no smoke without fire and the stigma sticks.
I've encountered people who've been driven to the point of seriously contemplating ending their own lives due to malicious and utterly false accusations. Not for nothing is Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour one of the ten commandments.
It's as well to remember that in a crisis, there will likely be an element of score-settling if people feel that the rule of law is temporarily or permanantly in abeyance. And that some of those scores may be directed against people whose face doesn't fit. We need to be mindful of not being either the victim of the ignorant gossip-monger or the unwitting participant in hating the out-group.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

There is a lot to be said for keeping your own counsel, especially when you may not know the full facts of a situation. One life - your life - live it!0

I'm a bit worried about not being able to see the bottom of that page. Mightn't my entitlement be listed on the lowest line as a sort-of postscript?:D

I have started taking money out at the cash point, but as you said, also spend with it, and get cash back too...
On the TV, they were saying that the wobble in the world's finances could knock us back to where we were 7-8 years ago. . they didn't say the 2008 crash, but that's what they ment...
The efforts of the banks has been to extend and pretend, there has been no fundamental improvement in their balance sheets even if they are saying that they have more capital. Their potential risks have shot up significantly courtesy of derivatives. This is why Deutsche Bank are in trouble.
Everywhere asset prices are significantly above where they should be, again this is to protect the banks from having to right down its assets to realistic values. This is why Japan is stagnating. They are not allowing the debts to be written off. This is happening here. So while the government is talking recovery the reality is that we are facing two or three decades of stagnation just like Japan. Japan may never recover until those bad debts are written off or work their way through the system. So with 100 year mortgages in Japan they face the prospect of a lost century. Though I expect that this would just open up new problems in pensions.COOLTRIKERCHICK wrote: »Talking about crashes, the pig/ pork industry is on its knees due to Russia putting a ban on pork imports , so there is a huge glut across Europe, with the Luke's of Denmark, Holland etc flooding the British markets with their low welfare meat..
Its even hitting the small hobby breeders/ producers like us, we took stores to market on Friday, and we brought them home.. No one would pay more than £10!!!! Loads of weaners were being sold for £1 as the owners didn't want to take them home.. Some didn't even get bids..
There is an anthrax a are in Wiltshire tooIt's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -
I should imagine as there is a flut of pigs/ pork they will not be paying much either, as some of the local butchers go to the livestock markets..
Going to try the other market we go to, but we are on a 21 day lock down now ( we can not move any pigs off our land, )
And they are a cracking litter of 9 too..Work to live= not live to work0 -
According to the news this morning stock markets are tumbling worldwide and opening this morning lower than they were last night when they closed. I rather feel this is yet another one of those 'interesting times' of the old Chinese curse. Hold tight, it's going to be a bumpy ride!!!0

Just by the by, why are the Russians banning pork imports? Is it a real reason or is it Putin having a quiet snigger?0
