I've always been of the opinion that if you have to extract your chosen form of defence from a handbag if you are attacked it just won't be any use to you. If you have to delve in bags etc when the person is actually hands on you'd be better learning how to kick him in the groin and stop him in his tracks. If acid is used you won't be able to actually see the bag, let alone get something out of it and actually use it against the attacker.0

How about looking into how to increase our own effectiveness in terms of knowing how to use certain moves that can disable an attacker regardless of how strong a person is. It may be more beneficial in a dire situation than urinating or spitting. When I get more time later I will investigate for myself and if I find anything of interest I will pass on here for anyone interested.
I did a self defence course and it is usually good to remember groin, eyes, throat and knee as the vulnerable areas to go for if you are being attacked.
Just being aware of your environment is also a good idea, predators will go for an easy target and look for someone distracted talking on the phone etc... Trust your gut instinct if you feel uneasy.0 -

In my last house I had no way of knowing just who was outside my front door basically before answering it - so would just do so.slightly embarrassed, yes, too hard, no :j:j:j

My shelving project has succeeded :j I'm really pleased at the result, making the most of storage, clearing space and ensuring hidden prep storage space is retained, all in one go :j:j

Woke up this morning, to an inch or so of snow.
It's snowing again now, but, so far, not very heavy.
I just hope I don't wake up to a foot or so, tomorrow morning.0 -
Thanks. grab twist pull is in my mind now. Oh I fancy the nose might be a goodun or even the ear.
I have in my mind some sort of poorly stored information that suggests to me that there are manoeuvres a defence less lady/gent who don't have much strength can perform. It's that I'll try to find out later.
My worry with spitting at someone would be that it would anger an already heightened person. Urinating? I'm not sure as it's seen as a sexual act for some people anyway.0 -
True - that there are the odd few (in every sense of the phrase) that regard urination as a turn-on:eek: - but am hazarding a guess the vast majority would react as expected to that (ie "Yuk").
"Grab, twist, pull" - sounds like a possibly useful mantra to remember. "Whatever part of their anatomy" hmmm...I think I can guess which bit would come highest up the agenda. Think I might go for an arm instead though - as t'other bit might be a "barely there" and notta lot to grab hold of iyswim:rotfl:. Right you are then...whichever arm I could manage to grab then...0 -

If you are ever questioned about it just say that you are looking for 96 for a barbecue in the garden and you keep one in your bag for comparison if you find any loose bricks while shopping. :beer:It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -
There are the odd few who would want to attack to woman. Someone who does has a need that I couldn't ever begin to work out. Maybe it's my younger age but I think that I can stave of any unwanted attention better with physical force than trying to surprise an attacker.
Anyway, well worth debating.0 -
Don't know if you ladies are the same... maybe it's just us men of a certain age... but can you really pee on demand? It takes me at least ten seconds of thinking about it before anything happens.
Also, if you are in a situation where your adrenaline was pumping, I suspect your body might prevent any normal functions until you are relaxed.0 -
If you have to delve into your handbag that can waste valuable seconds. It might be simpler to keep a house brick in your handbag and just swing it instead. It will save valuable seconds when you really need them.

In the late 90s I used to have to take the backup disks home from work. If anyone remembers syquest disks they'll know why everyone used to joke that I'd never have any problems if someone tried to mug me...
We've taught the kids how to escape from people who try to snatch them - crouch down, and push the hand that's grabbed their arm away with their own other hand while shouting 'Help, Stranger' very loudly. A friend's kids were taught this at school, and it seems to work pretty well - crouching down (for kids and short people) works as for most adults it will pull them off balance.0
