  • We took a friend of DD1s on her first ever visit so we were totally tourist!! We stayed near Alexanderplatz and walked up Unter den Linden to the Brandenburg Gate, spent a few glorious minutes in the 'quiet' room to the right of the gate then walked on to the Reichstag building. We visited Fassbender and Rauch the chocolate shop, Potsdammer Platz shopping centre and Market, the Zoo, even visited Ka De Ve ( think that's iffy spelling ) the flagship store of expensive things. We walked some of the wall and went to the museum and photographic exhibition attached to it, even have a guard tower still and part of the death zone behind the east side of the wall, very dark very sombre. But mostly we visited the Weinachts Markts and had as much fun as we possibly could, that's Berlin for you, the most happening place I know!!!

O sorry I didnt know, I dono where Heartbeat is but just that it's Yorkshire LOL

Place called Goathland, not far from Whitby. I think the pub and garage are still there but the place is quite touristy. You also have to watch out for sheep wandering in the road.

Does anybody else get the feeling of ... how can I put this lol - like being 9 and on your bike, flying down a steep hill and realising that you're going far too fast and have no idea how you're going to stop? lol - That's where I am now! With govt, politics, the world iin general.

I get that feeling just growing older, owning a house and having a puppy, I don't even need to consider the rest of the world to find myself hurtling forwards without a clue where the brakes are!

My OH is actually quite brazen about not answering to unexpected people/people he doesn't know. He actually opens the internal door to the porch looks through the glass at them and then shuts the door again and walks away lol.

My father in law terrorized two Jehovahs witnesses, he'd been forking some mulch on their property and seeing two chaps in suits with smiles marching towards him, greeted them with a gruff expression and a pitchfork in hand. "State your business" he said, and when they struggled to stutter and lost their smiles, he said "Now leave". They beat a hasty retreat! He's never been visited again.

Cooltrikerchick, if they ban growing food, there's so many ways round it you wouldn't believe. Ok, so tomato plants are obviously tomato plants, so the key is to grow obscure ornamental looking things no-one would recognise. Not sure what the English equivalents would be, but in Australia I grow pineapple sage, amaranth, malabar spinach, carpet thyme, gingers.... I don't see how they'd police it, watch if you eat the clippings?

Footwear in Australia is generally the thong (flipflops in English). At first glance, you think what an impractical form of footwear, but you'd be wrong. Fully ventilated for Australian heat, great in sand, mud or water. Easily washable. And the handiest weapon known to man. Giant spider? Grab your trusty thong and give it a thwack. Pesky cockroach? Thong it. I have to confess though, my uncle in laws wife took it a bit far, when cornered by a large snake and on her own in the house, she thonged it to death. Knowing uncle wouldn't believe it, she kept the dead snake in the freezer until he got home. He attested that it was indeed a large one. And quite flat.

Thank you nuatha and CTC that helps a great deal. The only advise I had was from DH which suggested muck boots like himself (fisherman) but I now I see those lace ups with fluffy innards I'm clear what I would like. Much appreciated. :)

The water collection policy is that they have laws that means that rain is property of the water company and if you divert to your own barrels rather than allow it to feed ground water then you are depriving the water company of their water. It goes back to gold panning days and river flow, so you could not damn the river to hoard any gold in the river. I suspect that many gated communities have similar ordinances over what you can do within the perimeter of the community.

Just in case people are wondering why there are so many Syrians fleeing you really only need to see this, and note how extensive the destruction is to decide if you would stay under such circumstances.

I'd add some Norwegian loop stitch wool socks - finest thing I've found for keeping my toes warm in sub sero temperatures.
