He Who Knows has just done the 2 and a half hour drive back from DD1 and is shattered!!! Flooding everywhere, much traffic moving very slowly and a few accidents made it NOT a pleasant experience but he's here now, having a coffee, nursing tired eyes and a headache but SAFE!!!
The rain is incessant and heavy today, the patio is an inch deep and I have pan pipes playing in the windows again, but I have made soup for lunch, the fire is laid ready to go, the wood is dry and we're warm and dry, not bad eh?0 -
Twiglet I have a tyre air compressor thing too ..as the lane to our smallholding got loads of pot hole/ bumpy, and like you I was fed up of keeping a stash of 20p's in the ash tray lol.. Think I bought it for around £5 odd??
Martha .. As long as you got good soles on your shoes going down that hill to use as breaks you should be OK??? But even good soles will wear thin after time..
Re- buses and local services.. Alot of local bus routes are being subsidised by local councils etc.. And there comes a point where if it is not being used it will be cut. They just can't run a regular bus service for one or two people. Another mse'r on another thread lives in a remote part of Scotland, and their bus is 3 times a week..
Sadly this is the world we are in, rather than appreciating what services we do have, people always expect more.. Which sadly is not going to happen for a very long time, with all the cutbacks.. Unless you go private for medical treatment and hire taxi transport etc..
I can honestly see that our country will get like other counties where there are no benefits ( only temp emergency loans instead of JSA etc) no pensions unless private, no housing benefits etc. And families members that work will be looking after members financially that don't.
Edt....I wouldn't be surprised if they try and ban growing food in your gardens like certain states in America..Work to live= not live to work0 -
The local farmers got together to dredge our 'beck' these past two days. Over the years - 30 of them to be exact - the bottom of the beck had built up and an actual island had formed in the centre of one stretch etc etc. They removed a lot of mud and flood debris and built up the sides with rocks. I understand some equipment had been hired and the environment agency is paying for the work There isn't anyone downstream who will suffer for this but the river has gone back to its traditional course and the nearby cottages should be safer.
I'm a bit relieved someone else is getting the rain for the mo (sorry!). Let's share it out. Who hasn't had any?0 -
wonder if its standard practice for various government depts especially benefit depts to check facebook for discrepancies[/]
If people set their security settings properly they wouldn't be able to do this. My colleagues keep asking me why I'm not on FB. I am, and under my own name, but they can't find me.It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -
Why would you want to stop people growing their own food?Spend less now, work less later.0

Yeah. An ONS survey geezer wanted me for their survey and seemed affronted and astonished that I didn't want to participate. He was very pushy - eventually I told him it wasn't convenient just then and he self-arranged to return.
Sadly I was 'out'. I have lately adopted the habit of some of my asocial neighbours and am 'out' to all unexpected callers. Saves me from the door-to-door chuggers, too.:rotfl:
My OH is actually quite brazen about not answering to unexpected people/people he doesn't know. He actually opens the internal door to the porch looks through the glass at them and then shuts the door again and walks away lol.

Does anybody else get the feeling of ... how can I put this lol - like being 9 and on your bike, flying down a steep hill and realising that you're going far too fast and have no idea how you're going to stop? lol - That's where I am now! With govt, politics, the world iin general. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0

I can see people going back to the potage style garden in order to hide the food and fruit growing if the ptb try and bring it in here, and on the gardening note I'v been finding out my chilli and sweet pepper seeds to sow later on this month.£71.93/ £180.000 -

Same here - I've just been soaked walking into the village (for a newspaper to stuff my running shoes with so they'll dry out), and there are huge amounts of water in the road. The water levels in the river are up considerably, but nowhere near full - however, the problem is, as ever, that the drains can't cope. The Parish Council have been on to highways about this for ages, but nothing seems to be happening (although this year they have actually managed to jet the drains, and sensibly did them again in the autumn).0 -
Raining here again and has been all night so the local river is up high again, hope it doesn't flood down the line in croston again as they are still cleaning up from the boxing day floods.
Hope ev1 has a better 2016 than they did 2015, also getting out seeds and seed catalogs here as well
