Seconding this - pineapple, is there anything we can do to help, like collect & donate old pillowcases for impromptu sandbags, as we did for Somerset a couple of years ago?Angie - GC Aug25: £478.51/£550 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0 -
Hellish night here, thought the windows were coming in or the roof was going to lift. Fedup of wind and rain. Re Cumbria, I don't see much practical help for the poor folk - only stupid bl00dy Cobra meetings. A nice cosy warm room in Downing St is a world away from a wet cold miserable street in the north west isn't it- and far easier to do than actually roll sleeves up and do something useful. They could book out the Travel Lodges and Holiday Inns and giive the flooded 2 nights r & r with a nice xmas dinner.0

Merry Christmas everyone and I hope that none of you have any SHTF situations over the holidays period. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0

Hi to you all , and I hope you all have a peaceful christmas , thank god its nearly here im so fed up with all the build up to it since November , phew what a relief its nearly over....I popped to shop early this morning to get my bread and milk and everywhere was hectic .........
I really feel for all the poor folk flooded out up north , cant imagine how they are all getting on , a local bisiness in our small town has decided to get people locally to donate , foods , clothes , toys , bed linen etc for the flood victims , and so far he as sent 5 palletts to them , bearing in mind he as to pay the freight cost and we live 300 miles from cumbria , so its costing a lot but what a kind man to do that , he said he will send as much goods up to them if people keep finding stuff to put on the palletts , so we are all donating goods.......The weather fore cast for the xmas period doesnt look good for the north .....
My eldest son is 40 today , god where as that 40 year gone.........
Im going to spend the day tomorrow with hubby in the home , be nice having christmas dinner cooked for me .....
I wish you all well and enjoy the xmas break.....Love SheilaMy motto is " one life live it ".....:)0 -
Right at this very moment - and it may (or may not) be a personal SHTF situation of needing to get half way across the country like right NOW.
I don't have a car - and its Christmas.
One of my parents has just turned severely ill and I may or may not have to get back to home area quickly. At the moment - its not quite clear whether this is something "passable/curable" on the one hand or "Drastic - and will, quite possibly, affect both of them at the same time" on the other hand - and its Christmas....
Time will tell and I'm too far away for the daily visits to hospital I have always made if one of them is in hospital (as now...). It takes hours to get from Here to Home using public transport - and its Christmas:(
So - if it comes to it (which I don't know yet) then its about 200 miles away and one heck of a palaver/time taken to get there by train. I've found out the cost by the taxi firm I use here if I need one to the nearest station and that's an amount that is very expensive (as its so far away from here) but could be handled if need be. I am wondering how much it would cost for them to take me all the way back pronto if need be - and they didn't know either (as they obviously aren't used to very long length journeys).
Does anyone know what sort of cost it would be to get a taxi about 200 miles "if"? They are a pretty reasonable and reasonably-priced firm - but, as neither they nor I have the foggiest idea - its a bit difficult to plan "according" if it comes to it (which is still very much "in the lap of the gods").
Has anyone else ever taken a LONG taxi journey and, if so, what did it cost them? They are a pretty good firm and would clearly do what they could to help out - and I don't object to paying "whatever it takes" in principle - but am scared it would cost one heck of a lot. However, it would be the difference between a hassle-free journey taking about 4 hours and a journey that is "one heck of a hassle" and takes about 7 hours.0 -
Have you thought of trying Uber MITSTM?0
