Preparedness for when

Possibly, thriftwizard, if I could be arrissed. It took about 16 hours to drain completely and I have no need to have a tub standing full of water. I was just being a bit hardcore because we had a drought. Maybe I ought to think about getting another plug, in case I did need a tub full of water. Greywater to flush the loo would always be handy in a crisis.
Fascinating listening to people's set ups at home. I pick the brains of the electrical engineers at work, querying why one householder had some of the sockets in each room working and not others. It was something to do with the wiring and was quite deliberate. It's very handy if you have more than a micro-home (I have four small rooms in a 240 sq ft flat).
I think a lot of prepping is getting away from the mindlessness of assuming that water will always come out of the tap, and electricity will always be available at the flick of a switch. I have enough memories of the 1970s to know neither of those things is a given. And we could be subject to a terrorist attack which took down a utility (or even several) for hours or even days.
The best thing to do would be to avoid being part of the problem, and to come through the crisis in the best shape possible.Just grinning at the thought of what would go through somebody's mind if they rummaged into the nooks and crannies of my outwardly normal-looking home.
Bedroom; longbow and arrows, stored water, stored food, kelly kettle, camping gear, stored stuff too outre to be discussed on t'interwebs.........:rotfl:Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

You do realise this 'normal' of which you speak is merely a setting on tumble driers?
Being Old Style Money Saving there's an excuse for you not being acquainted with said item ...Those dreadful things which scalp your clothes adn sponteously combust in your kitchen? Have a pal who lost her kitch and nearly her whole home to a TD fire.
Given what gets discussed on this thread you've REALLY got me wondering nowSssshhh, I don't burble everything I do on t'interwebs. Youse lot are a good bunch but you never know who's reading along...........
Have decided to finish my cuppa then go for a little roam. There's something unusual going on outside, the bit at the top of the picture is blue and there's a round yeller thing up there - not sure if it's safe to expose myself to this but will be brave and report back laters.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

It's far better to source yourself some of those camping water carriers and have them already filled and ready to be used. I have 2 x 25 litre ones and 1 x 10 litre ones, plus many many 2 litre bottles of water. Water is stashed in several places, all away from direct light (don't want sunlight on stored water or could get green algae growing in it). I switch out the water in the containers every 3 months (put it in bath and use it that way).
It's a pretty minor faff and ensures that I'm covered for short and middling term crises. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -

Perplexed Pineapple - Thanks for that link re: Cambridge research.
Grunt Doveling is choosing his A level options and things like that are very "carrotty" in their appeal.
Strangely, we cannot convince him that cookery is basic chemistry.:DNot dim.....just living in soft focus

Just heard on the news about the Boeing 777 being diverted because of a suspect package in the loo. I don't get people's sense of humour to fake something like that.0

I find a suspect package in my toilet every day but solve that crisis with a simple flush.
Though I would never make any such joke on a plane or near an airport. It seems it was an exceptionally crude device to cause more panic than be a real threat. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0
