I read it too as "all LA Schools"
    - the Local Authority Schools (which, I presume, must be translation - as few would translate LA into Los Angeles)

    - "all" as meaning all - all the LA schools throughout Britain (but presumably not the private ones).

Is confused now...will be looking at my local State school as I go near it to see if its open....

It sounds utterly ludicrous to me to ban gas cookers, (and gas generation.) Unless you build umpteen nuclear stations, how is anyone going to cook their supper in winter when it's dark and there's no wind?

I thought they were trying to reduce electrical demand between 4 & 7pm? This is going to increase it, isn't it?

BTW, how are they planning to heat flats? There will likely not be enough grounds to provide ground source heating, never mind that it's going to be difficult for any flats above the ground floor to connect to.
There was an interesting study about using electric cars as a battery for household energy. Once there are enough electric cars or domestic batteries renewables are able to provide all of our power overnight during windless nights. So the climate skeptics comments about cloudy or windless days is a red herring.

Making full use of incentives to insulate homes and improve energy efficiency of appliances all helps reduce demand. If demand can be stabilised then it makes planning even easier.

Also the Shetland Islands are totally renewable already and even export electricity to the mainland. It can be done relatively easily and without the huge problems that come with nuclear power. Remember that governments love nuclear power because it gives them a fresh supply of weapons, while they fail to adequately provide for the clean up costs because those costs will be dumped on our grandchildren.

Reading up on the issue a little bit I understand it that the climate deal has experts claiming that cooking/heating with gas will have to be phased out to meet the targets. I can't find any suggestion that there's going to be a ban coming amongst government sources. The wording is 'may' or 'could' etc. It seems the report I have been reading is from mail online and the expert being a university lecturer.

I can't find any suggestion at how we're going to meet the targets but I expect we'll hear more through the years.

I can't help feel it's a bit of a good thing in terms of the way we use fossil fuels to heat and eat but I suppose that depends on what we have to change to.

Anyone managed to find any more info?
The first problem is that to keep to the 2C rise then 90% of all fossil fuels will probably have to remain under the ground permanently. So gas supplies will be problematic what ever is decided.

Cooking by gas creates CO2 but when it escapes it is 20 times more potent as a green house gas. So ultimately cooking with gas will probably have to disappear to reduce emissions of all greenhouse gases. There are plenty of alternatives. Microwaves or induction hobs are also more efficient as well.

Also rather than simply banning it initially they will probably apply a carbon tax to gas so that it simply becomes too expensive for most people to use, and use the revenues to make purchasing an electric alternative tax free.

Hmm. I'd be unplugging my electric car if I thought my neighbour was running his oven off the battery. :)
  • I wouldn't be unduly surprised if the government tried to get away with saying "We haven't stopped you using gas at all - honest guv" out of one side of their mouth, whilst "rationing by price" out of the other side of their mouth. "Two-faced" is the word that comes to mind to describe that stunt...

Anyway - first newspaper article I've come across about this is:

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-3360272

I read gist of his article as being "They may not say they are going to ban use of gas appliances etc - but it is the logical only answer as to how to meet those targets".

Will have to catch up on what the "quality" papers have to say about this tomorrow now.

Still feeling distinctly nervous about my continuing use of my new gas boiler and my blinkin' expensive new gas fire....

Or you could look at the news headlines maybe?

And we were getting on so well too. ;)

It was breaking news when I posted. It came on my screen as 'all LA schools are closed due to an unspecified threat'. That's what I wrote at the time.

Apologies I should have put LA in America or wrote Los Angeles. I didn't wish to worry anyone.

You would also be credited for that supply of electricity to your neighbour. So are you going to turn down that extra income? Add in that it makes economy 7 even more useful for people so you could recharge your car at economy 7 prices yet get paid standard rate electricity when your neighbour cooks during peak hours.

Probably, yes, I would turn it down.

Those batteries aren't cheap you know, and every time you charge & discharge, it takes a little bit of their life away.

Edit. Plus of course there's the cost of the inverter. (Thousands)

It is not really a problem. If anyone thought it might impact them then they would probably look elsewhere for additional information or check any links given to them. In fact everyone should exercise a little skepticism to avoid being misled. They might have a local newspaper website or local paper itself to double check. In fact that would make front pages of a local paper.

    Errrrm....think previous poster is American????
No the entire post was a rather large copy and paste job from a 2009 article.
There was a link at the end of it all.
