BMF I actually did this one weekend my god you should have heard the screams...it was TEOTWAWKI in my house as games were lost without being saved etc It was my youngest who put me up to it as he was bored as everyone was 'plugged in'...
we spent a really nice afternoon playing board games and having a BBQ in the end and to this day no-one is the wiser

Dawemouse for the meds I'd use a ziplock bag inside a dry sack. These are often on special in Millets and Sports Direct

Just catching up last few pages..
:p I did this once in a shared house; threw the main fuse between 3 am and 6 am to stop the burgers partying and keeping me awake on a weeknight. These localised powercuts are a terrible thing, aren't they?:rotfl:Thye never did twig, bless 'em.

Dippypud, that first linkie comes up with a blank page when I click on it but I have bookmarked the second one for future perusal.

I was in le supermarche a while ago on my way home from work and thought I'd have another 2 litre bottle of water for my stash when I checked the BB date and it was Dec 12 whereas the ones I'd been buying on and off for the past couple of months were all Feb 13. Reckon they must have found a stray box in the stockroom somewhere.

BigMummaF, your posts are cracking me up. Welcome.

In addition to consideration to exotics like snakes and iggies, can I suggest that people who run fish tanks with heaters/ electrical pumps give a bit of thought to a prep plan for their wee fishies?

Can't tell the details (too many RL identifiers) but have known a pwer-down and evac situation which cost a tankful of much-loved fish to meet their maker.

All right, chilling for a while before going out but will catch up with y'all tomorrow. GQ xx

Hi everyone. I've read this thread from the beginning and think that being prepared for whatever life is going to throw at you (us), is very sensible. The boy scout's motto to "be prepared" was there for a reason!

For those of us that don't have swimming pool sized lakes under our houses, ;) has anyone seen or made one of the bio sand water filters before? (G**gle for them) I only saw them for the first time the other day and thought that for an extended SHTF scenario, having the knowledge to be able to put one of these together would be indispensable. I'm sure one could be constructed out of plastic (PTFE) bottles or buckets.

    Anyway better get on.

    Peace. :)

In terms of water preparedness google life saver and check out the water bottle that comes up, scientifically far ahead of others products but I do know this is a bit more expensive.

The other thing to consider is water purification tablets so you can use whatever supply you can get your hands on. Even if the supply is a bit dodgy short term this might be a better solution for those with limited storage space for bulky water.

Hi missrir. Yes I have seen the Life S@vaer, LifeStr@w, K@t@dyn filters and know about iodine, boiling, bleach and SODIS etc. SODIS is good if you have the sunshine, but iodine, bleach and filters will run out / wear out ... eventually. The bio sand filter can be easily constructed from easily available materials and will provide clean bacteria and virus free drinking water. N.B. This doesn't just work like a britt@ filter - hence the bio bit. The filter never wears out either, so, in an extended SHTF, I still think it would be something to consider. I suppose the only downside is that it isn't as portable as some of the other options, but then niether is a lake beneath your house. ;)

    Peace :)

Another animal question. How much dog food do you keep. I have 30 kilos in the basement and 18 wet meals. Then there is the treat stash. Poor WC is upset, most of his treats come in those plastic ziplock bags. Now things like peanuts and chocolate raisins are packaged the same way. He hears the ziplock and thinks he's getting lucky. Oh, and I have 21 litres of bottled water for him.
we have 6kgs of dry dog food in the "stores" on rotation plus another 3kg being used up at any one time - one 3kg bag is about 3-4 weeks 'rations' and we have between 1 week and 1 month of snax at any one time for her too plus a weeks worth of each in her grab bag.

the cats have about 6 weeks of food on hand in their tub and about 4 weeks in stores and one week in their grab box. they dont get snax these days. poor kitties.

water is something we're still working on for all of us, I have only got only 15 litres of sealed bottled spring water stored and I am slowly filling empty soda bottles with tap water and storing those of which I have just checked and have just 8 litres plus 2 litres in the doggy bag and 1 in the cat box any more is just too heavy to realistically carry. we have 3 litres in each of the cars usually plus we have lots of diet coke :o

Re cat food I always buy in bulk (from Zooplus, also gives cashback via Quidco and 5% off if you buy more than £95 - if I remember correctly), so I always have loads of cat food in storage, I buy 15 Kg sacks of Bozita and also their tetrapaks which are really convenient and last forever.
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
