They seem to be suggesting that it can be fixed at the cost of a loss of power. Ours is a250 CDI so we certainly would not be left underpowered. However our manufacturer is not implicated just at present so we wait and see. One thing that is promising is that we do actually get MPG that bears some relation to the test figures( as in less but not absurdly less) so maybe they haven't been fraudulent over emissions either.
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Hahahaha! Bless them - that much money'd do the seven of us for about 3 weeks!

About the cars - the smell of petrol makes me feel violently sick, so we've driven diesel for many years now. I'm not that fond of diesel either, but at least it doesn't make me feel nauseous & wobbly for half an hour after filling up. I'd rather not have to drive at all; I'm not a natural driver and end up exhausted after days like yesterday when I took my 89 y.o. mother 50-odd miles downcountry to visit my older brother, who's recovering from an operation. I'm the one who hardly talks when driving, as I really need to concentrate properly, and I won't even hear my phone going off.

But let's get this straight - there may be a lot in the press about how bad diesel is just now, but petrol is just as bad if not worse as it's 20% less efficient and emits more CO2 & hydrocarbons. Please don't imagine that ditching the diesel & buying a spanking new petrol car is environmentally-friendly - it isn't, and never will be. And diesel emissions are harmful to health in inner-city environments, where they're very concentrated with thousands of engines belching fumes out in constant traffic jams, but rather than turn to petrol, people should be turning to public transport & insisting on good, cheap & efficient services as well as proper bike lanes & parks. Other countries, many of them much poorer than the UK, can manage a decent public transport infrastructure - why can't we?

That is only a 72 hour pack as well. While the longevity of the packs are good the costs are ridiculous. I think dehydration offers a much more affordable solution for most people.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.
  • What we really need is an affordable and fit for purpose public transport system that is properly run and covering the whole country, not privately owned franchises that are different in every area where the prime objective is to make a profit for shareholders and not serving the people they are carrying. Then we'd not all need our own vehicles would we?
  • I think if there was a national public transport net work, which was either free, or very heavily reduced. Then it will be used more, and in fact will prob help the job market, shops etc

    Wouldn't that be wonderful!

Mind you, there would always be people who are unable to walk as far as the bus stop, or who use a wheelchair and can't get on the bus because the available space is already in use. I can't think of a way round those atm.

The tax DH pays on his company VW Passat car is based on the emissions of the vehicle...

errr, not so. Give me a load of CO2 any time compared to the noxious gases, like nitrogen oxide, which is a real killer. We were swept along with the diesel bull**** just like millions of others. We only did about 8k miles a year after dh retired, prior to that it was 40k and all in diesel cars, up and down the motorways behind clouds of diesel gases, well my dh died from what could very well have been the effects of all those miles of fumes

  • Hi IVYLEAF it will always be necessary for some folks to run vehicles and being disabled is probably top of the list for that but a fully integrated and regular affordable transport system would mean that lots of us wouldn't need to use our vehicles every day just to get to work, the shops, hospitals, etc. which would do wonders for the environment and make life so much better.
