If I were behind ISIL strategy, then announcing that the refugees were seeded with ISIL warriors would provide the perfect disruption. While that was happening I wouldn't waste the resources risking having trained troops dying aboard unseaworthy ships when I could fly them into Europe from Dubai on holiday flights. And the media would have everybody looking at the Med, thankfully our security services aren't as gullible as the newspapers believing public.

Terror is a weapon that doesn't need any reality behind it, terror is a weapon that uses your own fear to do its work. Meanwhile I'll keep prepping for the real world issues facing me and mine, as well as supporting a couple of local initiatives that are doing what they can to help refugees.

quite. how incredibly useful as well to have those fleeing your terror hunted down and punished by your enemies by seeding the thought that they are the terrorists so they are attacked and refused refuge.

Alternatively, we could treat human beings with dignity, respect and care, they, their friends and relations would know that we are not who ISIS say we are. Lets not turn into the "other" that terrorists portray us as.

I'm very cynical about statements such as there are 4,000 waiting to launch attacks in Europe. Seems a great way to make people sweat and shiver with no evidence whatsoever. I'm rather more concerned about the rapist who has struck in my neighbourhood this week (reportedly a white Englishman) than any possible bogeymen among the refugees.

The most danger most people will ever be in is from their own cells (cancer) or their own arteries (heart attack and stroke).
There are probably 4000 more than ready to kick off if the 7.29 from East Grinstead to Victoria is late on an average morning.

Also these 4000 supposed IS terrorists will be spread out across an entire continent so will probably out numbered by have a go heroes no matter where they strike.

Thanks for the virtual hugs, things will work out and hopefully in a year from now, I'll think back and wonder what all the fuss was about.

Mardatha, if there were a couple of young single men, right now they'd get their own shovel each to help me dig alongside them. Plenty of good physical labour to keep people busy and out of trouble here.

I ran out of loo roll, but not wine... that would have been a shtf situation (got a referral voucher for a wine delivery company, a dozen bottles of the best wine I ever tasted delivered for under 2 quid a bottle. Spending on it meant we had lentils 5 ways last week and will have more lentils this week, but other than the increased..er..,gas production, it has improved matters)

  • Am I terrible that I think voluntary work should be mandatory? What a completely different world we'd live in if people had to take some responsibility for their local community. The rich could opt out as long as they paid for someone to do a full time role in their place coordinating these press ganged volunteers!!!
  • Only an hour a week I meant x what a difference everyone doing just one hour could make

Was this meant to be in another thread?
  • No I think if people were more involved and engaged with their communities and invested then rather than repeating daily mail headlines of no room here. People would bring aware of local issues like the number of derelict houses etc and actually see that these is room for people who are in real need from war zones. I think because we are all so insular we don't know enough about our local councils so just form our opinions from the red tops.

I suppose I'm asking how do you educate people to have a social conscience and care about more than just themselves.
  • Maybe I didn't explain myself very well. An example is where I live. One area is regularly cleaned and green and leafy. Another has alleys and densely populated and is plagued with fly tipping rats dog mess. My friend who lives in the latter area regularly rings the council and little is done. As she pointed out she pays her rates the same as everyone in the green and leafy area the difference is she would struggle to find people who would join up with her to form a committee
    write to the paper
Attend and speak at council meetings

In the less affluent areas people are less likely to speak up and take ownership of there area. So if people HAD to engage it might mean people have a more diverse range of people they know rather than small silos of people they know and be more welcoming of people and see them as people and not immigrants.

Sorry not very good at articulating verbally let alone finger to phone keyboard and still very early x
  • It's partly the world we've created MOJO, if most of your interactions with other humans are via mobile phone, facebook, twitter etc. and you spend the majority of your time either alone or with a select few friends who subscribe to the same views in life as you do how DO you learn to interact with other human beings? and for there to be community spirit that interaction MUST take place and take place with many other people regularly to give that pride of place and feeling of belonging. If you have a job that means you leave early in the day and return late in the day you'll not find local people and if there are no facilities like clubs, associations, a village shop, even an active church or a thriving and welcoming pub the venue TO meet people isn't there. We live increasingly solitary lives, no wonder then that we don't have the social conscience that used to be endemic is it?

There are quite a few problems with that. What will those on community service do? Get locked up instead?

Then what about those already working why should they be excluded? What if you are doing multiple zero hour jobs already totalling up to 80 hours a week?

The problem you are discovering is that central government has slashed the budgets of councils and so they do not have the resources to do these things. Secondly if you did impose such rules what will you do with all the people you have just made redundant because of your free work program? Will they now have to do their old job for free now sans pay packet?

Also many inner city areas also have many problems that rural areas do not have. The constant churn of people means that communities do not develop and imposing community work on them will achieve nothing towards fostering that idea.
