There are quite a few problems with that. What will those on community service do? Get locked up instead?

Then what about those already working why should they be excluded? What if you are doing multiple zero hour jobs already totalling up to 80 hours a week?

The problem you are discovering is that central government has slashed the budgets of councils and so they do not have the resources to do these things. Secondly if you did impose such rules what will you do with all the people you have just made redundant because of your free work program? Will they now have to do their old job for free now sans pay packet?

Also many inner city areas also have many problems that rural areas do not have. The constant churn of people means that communities do not develop and imposing community work on them will achieve nothing towards fostering that idea.

Eek it is a slightly dictator-ish idea!!
  • It's partly the world we've created MOJO, if most of your interactions with other humans are via mobile phone, facebook, twitter etc. and you spend the majority of your time either alone or with a select few friends who subscribe to the same views in life as you do how DO you learn to interact with other human beings? and for there to be community spirit that interaction MUST take place and take place with many other people regularly to give that pride of place and feeling of belonging. If you have a job that means you leave early in the day and return late in the day you'll not find local people and if there are no facilities like clubs, associations, a village shop, even an active church or a thriving and welcoming pub the venue TO meet people isn't there. We live increasingly solitary lives, no wonder then that we don't have the social conscience that used to be endemic is it?

I think you've got what I'm getting at ..... Although you've failed miserable in giving me the answer i was looking for and solving all of society's failings .... so disappointed in you not managing to do that Mrs LW ;-)

There are probably 4000 more than ready to kick off if the 7.29 from East Grinstead to Victoria is late on an average morning.

Thanks for the virtual hugs, things will work out and hopefully in a year from now, I'll think back and wonder what all the fuss was about.
I hope so, softstuff, it sounds like its been a really hard time.

  • Unfortunately, as already mentioned council's just don't have the money to do everything. But individuals can still do stuff for themselves. Your friend could pick a small area and pick up the rubbish herself (if others saw her they might join in - stranger things have happened).

I live on a gated road (public roads with gates across the road that are shut to keep sheep from wandering). People have to get out of their car to open the gates, and they sometimes decide to divest themselves of their rubbish while they are at it. (The vast majority are very respectful of the countryside). I walk the dogs that way now and again and pick up the rubbish. At my husbands place of work everyone complained about the bushes in the car park overgrowing and scratching cars - he took in a hedge trimmer. Not our jobs, but small things we could improve ourselves.

AnimalTribe that's how I think too.
  • Trouble is lots of people say `someone should do this or that` not many seem to take responsibility and lead by example. Things do get done if a communal job gets started by one person, others do come out and join in. I have just come back from a simple little job ie clearing stones from a communal storm drain. So I agree wholeheartedly with animal tribe

I am pretty good at taking home my rubbish, and do not leave anything that will not biodegrade very rapidly. Living by the sea I see lollipop sticks all over the place but being a prepper I collect them as potential tinder for a kelly kettle or another stove. Other items I will put in the bins and recycling bins if possible. Though things like apple cores or crisps will be either devoured by the local critters.

The funny thing is, was that I randomly picked a town and estimated a morning rush hour time. I have no idea if such a train actually existed. :rotfl:

  • Sorry MOJO (note to self Must Try Harder!) (people say I'm trying though will that do?)(Very trying! maybe there's a double meaning there!) I'd love to be able to solve all the ills of society but I think it's a task too big for a simple solution and try as we might, you can't undo modern life just try to limit the damage it causes eh?

We have an ageing population in the main in the village and because we're river frontage and sailing is popular we get lots of people coming for the water and watersports, it makes for a lot of litter so even though we are older once or twice a year the residents association mounts a voluntary Beach Clean Saturday and a surprising number of people turn out for it. We pick up in the open spaces and parks too, I live here too and don't like litter and mess, I've usually got a carrier bag in a pocket and fill it and find the nearest bin, lots of other people do likewise. The problem is worse at weekends and school holidays but enough people here act rather than moan that it's a solveable problem and doesn't get out of hand, a good place to live!

Yes but problems do not get solved without suggestions. Sometimes they work and others have holes and need to be tweaked to make them workable. Better to make suggestions to set outlines as to what will work. It is far better to make suggestions and learn from mistakes than blindly carry on regardless like some governments do.

There can be communities if people get to stay in the one place long enough. Just too much work if you are always moving, and have no stability.
