We had a mini SHTF moment on Friday, the electric went off around 4pm and didn't come back on until about 2.30 am..

And yep got slightly caught out!! I have candles, a travel gas cooker etc, BUT they are between 3 places and not in this house lol.. Did manage to find some of my candles ..

Sooooooo my organisation skills have gone awol the last couple of M nths, with one thing and another.. So yep, the the recent question of how would you cope, and the power cut is getting me back on track!!!!!!

We're omitting to mention the easiest to catch and process most readily available source of protien which is most likely within feet of you as you sit and no I don't mean rats, although they are edible, I mean the humble garden snail all species found in the UK are edible introductions by the invading Romans and they farm themselves, in some cultures they are a delicacy. If we could overcome our squeamishness we would have something a lot easier to catch than hunting game!

I have read that worms are also edible, but to avoid squeamishness its recommended you chop and dry to throw in soups stews as added protein. TBH I reckon most stuff can be made edible by chopping and cooking in a stew/soup at least I hope so. I wonder if there are any edible frogs here as well, many cultures eat them hmmmm.

  • Slight problem eating snails and worms for those of us who don't eat meat - even of the not so squeamish variety:rotfl::rotfl:

Anyways.....I'll throw a thought into the mix there. Maybe people might like to watch the Channel 4 series that's on at present - ie Time Crashers. I've just watched the first episode.

Admits my take on watching it is "Weren't they cold/dirty/having to work every hour God sends/etc......and so glad my life is a late 20th century/early 21st century one....because I wouldn't do that....NO chance....".

Admits to admiring the celebs who do this sort of programme - as its something I wouldn't do even for that couple of days or so (with the knowledge I was "going home" afterwards) and being paid to do it personally....

    Thanks for that RUNCORN BRIDGE.

ALI yes I think earthworms are also edible but what the taste or texture might be like ??? not a clue but, I guess most meats firm up with cooking so perhaps not as you would imagine? I rather think again that indigenous frogs are edible, leastwise the legs thereof but the french ones are specially bred to have meatier appendages and I think our native frogs are a bit on the scrawny side. We have also got a very long coastline and that means shellfish such as winkles, mussels, limpets, cockles, crabs, razor shell clams are there in large quantities for the harvesting also many types of seaweed too, I think our hunter gatherer ancestors ate many of these types of foods, must have been easier to obtain than having to hunt a large mammal mustn't it?

I'm pretty certain that even those who don't eat meat would steel themselves to do so if there was no alternative but starvation. In the winter there's precious little around in the UK by way of fresh wild greens ,roots and fruits and if your prepping supplies were all used up.....I still say I'd rather be alive and eat worms if I had to than die from hunger on a principle!

I agree with you Mrs L I think being veggie and especially being vegan may well become an expensive luxury.

I believe we will all have to be flexitarian and like our ancestors eat whatever is available. There would be months in the year you might get away with no meat summer/autumn because of fresh foraging and stuff you can grow, otherwise during winter months it may be a big struggle.

Been looking at those underground greenhouses or walipini, if I had the land especially if it was a windswept area I would definately have a go, the idea of a frost protected growing area you could use all year around, low levels of weeds and pests all sound good to me. But I bet the bloody slugs would still love it lol.

Tbh I honestly don't think we know exactly how we would react and do in a dire SHTF situation...and nothing can be ruled out when it comes to survival and food etc.

People ask me if we slaughter our own pigs, and I say no, I could never do that, but I do send them off to the abotoir for them to do it etc.. BUT if SHTF we would have to do it, or starve...I could easily do chickens, etc

So I think there would come a point where vegaterians would have to eat some sort of meat or insect etc

    I agree.

Although a vegetarian, in a survival situation, I would have no hesitation in eating animal flesh, if the alternative was to starve.

:) But what are the ethics of cannibalism in a crisis? Is it more or less ethical to eat a vegetarian than an omnivore? As one of the latter, I would suggest that the vegetabliarians are much more nutritious and should be the first on the menu.

I personally think all politicians should be at the top of the list, and there should be some sort of scaraficial ceremony before hand too:D
