Having the planet destroyed by a passing death star is also beyond my budget so not worth worrying about. It is also highly unlikely. So at this moment EMP is not only highly unlikely and only slightly higher in probability if you were an anti-government agitator living in a country where the government had such technology.
Prepping is about mitigating risks in daily life which are not only possible and but probable in a time frame such as power cuts. EMP is not only improbable but if you are prepared will anyone else be? If you are the only one with a working TV or radio but there is no power and networks of any kind what use is it?It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -
Though does any terrorist group have such technology?
Who knows.
In August 2001, you might well have asked "does any terrorist group have the ability to take down two skyscrapers?"Also as someone who lives in a rural area I am highly unlikely to be impacted by any EMP let alone a terrorist sourced variety.
Actually, your location (urban or rural) has no bearing on the effects of an EMP attack.
If you are within line of sight, from the point of detonation, you will be affected.
An EMP stretches as far as the horizon, in all directions. If you are the only one with a working TV or radio but there is no power and networks of any kind what use is it?
After an EMP attack, having a working TV will be way down on your list of priorities.
Water, food, sanitation, cooking, heating and (if dependent on them) obtaining and storing medications, will be your immediate priorities.0 -
Colour me sceptical about the possibility of a terrorist organisation acquiring and successfully operating a large ballistic missile* together with a stolen thermonuclear warhead.
Alternatively it's probably widespread thermonuclear war along with the collapse of civilization, so I'm not keen on 'surviving' that and to exist in it's aftermath.
Personally I think Cameron and Osborne are the 'clear and present danger'** many of us should worry about and prep for.
* something larger than and with a greater range than a Scud missile, think IRBM +
** to use a rather silly expression, popular today.0 -

Totally agree ARMYKNIFE I'll strive to keep me and mine going through an awful lot if there is the least prospect of some sort of liveable life after the storm dies down but nuclear war? nope, there would be no point in doing all the prepping if all that waited at the end of it would be an uncomfortable and lingering death from radiation poisoning.0

Personally I think the banks are still the biggest threat to us all but I will accept that the decisions of prize idiots at the head of government can make things better or worse depending on what they decide to do in response to any crisis. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -
