We are at war and we all need to be vigilant.

But this concerns me more at the moment, the fact that we have been force fed GMO's without our knowledge since 2013 :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

A couple of weeks holiday and then manic weeks at work has only allowed me to catch up on this thread in the last few days. As always such useful information and tips; thank you all... :T

I saW this article and wondered why can't the UK adopt the same stance opposite GMOs as Russia? Or are the UK's hands tied to follow the EU?

    :) I hear you, thriftwizard.

I also hear my near neighbours two doors' down rowing about money. Again. On Saturday, they were partying with many cartons of beer, and smokes both legal and illegal, well on their way to being trollied by 3.50 pm when I came back into the neighbourhood before going out. They were still partying at 10.45 pm when I came home from my party, and were racketing around well into the night. They were enjoying themselves and today they are rowing about not having money to put on the electric (card meter).

I don't see them at Tosspots at YS time, or at the Magic Greengrocer on a nearby street looking for bruised bargains. Never yet biffed into them shopping at a chazzer (and any Saturday afternoon is usually good for bumping into colleagues shopping at the chazzers).

The difference between me in work and me out of work is £50 per week in cold hard cash. But there's a world of difference in how I conduct my life, the things I buy, the things I do, the way I shop etc.

Sadly, like thriftwizard, I find you can't quietly lead by example. People assume that there's some big trick to it, like an inheritance or a lottery win or black market income. They don't want to know the dozens of little tricks which make up an thrifty life, because this would mean doing things differently than they do them now, and change isn't easy.

A few times in life, I have been approached by friends and acquaintaces for informal life coaching. I'm willing, up to a point, but experience has taught me that most people will do anything except change their habits.
Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Must admit I tend to agree re the "leading by example" not working as a tactic. You can put the information out there certainly on how to live more economically and then people like us will carefully note down what bits of it we think we can apply to our personal situation (eg I read about laundry gloop on this website and was making it again for myself yesterday to name just one little idea). I'm still busily planting away to get more and more food growing in my garden and starting to share it around/encourage other people to grow what they can - whilst watching some of the biggest "complainers" about relative financial status not taking the hint that they might do a bit better if they started growing some food too in their neglected garden. Honestly, how hard is it to see a bit of bare soil sitting there and throw a packet of cheap salad greens seeds on it and see what comes up?

So - it is worth putting the information out there and some of us will get on and follow it and make best use of it. Over the years - I, for one, have been glad of getting what advice I could (be it at the micro level of eg making laundry gloop OR at the macro level of buying myself some more pension).

But, for those who aren't prepared to read the various levels of financial advice, then I do doubt they will follow our example of how they see us actually following our lives.

......and, yep, that can lead to others thinking we have more money than they have (and sometimes trying to find excuses to get some of it from us). The "eyes like saucers" syndrome I'm coming to call it - where they look at something we have and you can just see them thinking "That looks expensive #envious look" - but seem to be sublimely unaware that their own previous financial decisions (rather than bad luck) have sometimes been at the root of their worse position now.

MrsLW, having tried to do exactly that in our little community, the result has been that people have simply assumed that we somehow have more money than they do, not that we've just used what we do have more thoughtfully! I'm still reeling from hearing that one lad, who knows us well, told someone else that we must be "rolling in it" because we have a bigger house, that we've bought & paid for. No, Joe, we're not rolling in it & never were! We just worked hard, didn't go out much, didn't have foreign holidays except to visit family, only bought anything new when we couldn't source something secondhand or free, didn't give our kids everything they asked for (and that was hard on both them & on us, in the current climate) drove (carefully, & maintained) old bangers until they finally fell apart, etc. etc.

Apparently he's even wondered if we won the lottery! Bless him - never even buy a ticket unless I've earned the money myself free & clear & have no other call on it!

This certainly echoes with my experience Thriftwizard.

    Morning all......this is a good article... http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2015/07/14/greece-has-surrendered-but-europe-has-lost-too/?postshare=3161436918110901

It just about says it all really. The Greek pm gave a speech last night saying he had to accept the deal and wants them to vote for it even though he does not believe in it .

Meanwhile the IMF have told europe they are going to pull out completely unless they give them the debt relief they need, since the money is going to bail out banks elsewhere and not to Greece....

The parliament met this morning at 7am to get started on making the measures law, which Germany insists on before we get to speak to them again.....

They have to vote on the proposal this evening, but some are resigning rather than do that....and some of them were YES voters to austerity. There is going to be a reshuffle and some are being sacked for not voting for the proposals. Meanwhile, many folks are worried sick and they feel very angry, while others just shrug and get on with the struggle. Even if the measures are made law, the proposal agreed with and the first things sorted, it only buys us another set of talks on the bailout...it does not bring any money and it will never bring it for the citizens.. and this is a democracy?

I guess it comes under the 'You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink!' hat then and most of those who really NEED to make changes will never do so. Thank goodness we all have the mindset we do and each other to bounce ideas and good advice from.

Interesting bit of information on the news this morning is that power companies have realised there is very little spare capacity in the generating system, only 1 and a half percent this winter and so have paid £36 million to keep some power stations on standby in case they are needed which will give 5 and a half percent spare capacity.......just a matter of time before we get those rolling power outages they've been predicting for years I feel particularly with all the new building that the government has made happen. The poor old UK ship is creaking at the seams these days isn't she?

RANT ALERT!!! I am so fed up with EBAY these days, in the last three transactions with sellers there one purchase didn't arrive so we got a refund and then it turned up a couple of weeks later, OK postal delay for whatever reason so we paid again. Second item I ordered 2 of the same product but in different colours, one turned up and we had to contact the seller to see why the second hadn't been sent and Paypal had taken the money but not passed on the order. This morning the flat bottomed dutch oven I'd ordered specifically because it WAS flat bottomed has arrived with three little iron feet on the bottom and is a different model to the one I ordered. Checking the Ebay description I find that the seller has now changed the advert to show this model, GGggggggggrrrrrrrr now I have to arrange for it to go back and either the right one sent or a refund. I think the whole Ebay thing has become too much hassle to bother with!!!!!

Do you think that the population are changing their attitude to being in the Euro? Thinking that the alternatives could not be worse that what they have on offer?
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.

What the hell?EU to Cameron.....when we agreed to your demand not to use Eu stability fund money for a bailout..it was a political agreement, and therefore, it can be broken..
