  • DAWN I've got Kitchen in the Hills and use it regualrly, love the recipes too and also have Hovel in the Hills but haven't been able to find Garden in the Hills in a CS yet. GQ there is an author LILLIAN BECKWITH who as a retired school teacher purchased a croft on one of the scottish islands and wrote of her life there and the people she lived amongst. The one I read first is THE HILLS IS LONELY the whole series is well worth a read should you come across one.

After lurking for a year or two, finally felt compelled to join - mainly so I can change the awful view! But hey, we all need a shove! I have been so inspired since reading these threads. Thank you all so much.

  • Yes clouded over in South Wales today and raining tonight. I got quite cold and had the heating on for an hour.

Unfortunately, I've just had to change DGD2 into fresh jammies. She's like a little hot water bottle when she's asleep and had got all overheated and sweaty. :(

Anyone else gone back to blankets?

I switched back as they were easier to launder regularly to mitigate my allergies. However, an added bonus is that I can throw off the top blanket any time I get hot without getting out of bed.

I havent.. but it has crossed my mind. I often throw a blanket over a lightweight quilt for the same reason.

:) I've read all Lilian Beckwith's books, Lyn, inc one of her fiction books. Very heartwarming but I've come to conclusion, backed up by visiting the Outer Hebrides, that there's no way I'd want to live there.

I have a feather duvet which has seen better days and lost a lot of its loft and warmth. It was something like a 13.5 tog when new. My tiny flat is very very warm, so it's plenty, and in winter I throw a fun fur blanket over the top and draw that up around my shoulders and neck. Have never been too cold. If I get too warm, I just kick a bit of duvet off my legs until I'm comfortable again. Plans for the hottest part of the summer will involve a topsheet and my quilted bedspread, which is cotton but no batting between the layers.

 Have been awake since just after 5 am due to a !!!!!! outside seranading us with something between a bellow and a song. For nearly 30 minutes. I was expecting to hear windows banging open further up the Tower and 'words of advice' being issued. Said words would be concise and pithy and the first typically commences with F.

Or that someone would go down and let their fists do the talking. It has happened before. I did hear someone speaking quietly to him eventually and then he went away, so dunno if that was the Polis. They may have saved the selfish get from a pounding, but he's left me with a pounding headache and I haven't even been on the sauce. Grrr!!!!!!!!

Once I've turned myself into a civilised human bean, I shall head lottie-wards. There's been a little rain overnight and it's overcast now, but doesn't look like there was a lot.

Commiserations GQ. We don't have a shoebox towers in our little town, but I live on a through road between the local hostelries and our version of 'shoebox estate' (christened Beirut by some of the neighbours) :( I find Friday and Saturday nights the worst, and Summer worse than Winter. Why they choose to have their blazing rows/ swearing matches / impromptu sing songs etc just outside my bedroom window in the early hours I don't know. Same reason they chuck their fast food wrappers all over the pavement I suppose

We live just around the corner from a pleasant hostelry, and we never run out of pint glasses! I remove them from the hedge every week or so. I used to take them back to the pub, but was told that they couldn't re-use them for H&S reasons. So I (and the neighbours) re-use them for them now.

Very occasionally, we get bunches of inebriated teens screaming the street down on their way back from the fleshpots of our little medieval town. It's wearing, as there are people down this road who work all sorts of shifts; mostly OH will get up & go & tell them to shut up. As he's 6'3" and well-known for having been a member of the constabulary, and scarier still, married to me (who used to work at the playgroup, thereby becoming one of the ultimate authority figures) they don't stop to argue; they're usually round the corner & still accelerating before he gets to the end of the driveway. One of the reasons why he finds this town boring, I think!

Hoping a day at the allotment will clear your head, GQ - there was plenty of rain here in the early hours of the morning so that'll be on its way upcountry now. The air feels, and smells, wonderful & everything is very green & pleasant; I wish I could spend the whole day outside, but have a Guild meeting to fidget my way through.

Mid-week I had occasion to drive through the middle of our county on the country roads, which I had just about to myself. It was simply stunning; the trees were a symphony of blossom, from clouds of blackthorn through blushing apples to rosy-red haws and cherry-blossom. If I'd been Japanese, and had a camera with me, I'd never have got to my destination! And underneath, there are still acres of primroses, but also bluebells, not quite in full bloom yet but they'll be out in force this week. I'm not sure I've ever seen so much blossom at one time; it's a fantastic show. If any of you have a chance, get out into the countryside for a stroll this weekend!
