Its a shame you're not under the NHS here 2T you would be entitled to GF flour mixes and suchlike it doesn't cover everything and its not always edible but at least it helps people stretch the budget a little.
I suppose with things the way they are over there with the shortage of lifesaving drugs the last thing they'd prescribe would be GF stuff even though as you say, to some it IS lifesaving!
We prefer a lot of stuff thats GF still so even though I'm not as strict as I used to be we still use it in our everyday diet.
I know what you mean about even touching stuff if DS3 used normal playdough he went beserk so I even had to make that for nursery..then theres things you don't realise til you read the labels..chips (dusted in flour so they don't stick together),tomato sauce (used as a thickening agent) etc etc
The coeliac society was a great help to us as they used to produce an updated monthly list of allowable food, not sure if they still do it?
Just got the last of the apples out of the dehydrator so hopefully I'll have enough now to last until I can find a good deal on them.I have 6 jars of pears left that I foraged last year if all else fails it'll be pear and blueberry pie instead of apple
Sorting my shiny new prep cupboard out tomorrow exciting stuff,OH never let me have a proper cupboard before but has really come on board recently rather than just humouring me,rolling his eyes and tutting0 -
my hubby is a painter and decorator, and if often bring home lots of junk that he thinks is usueful, but generally its not. i keep telling he's a womble and one day our home will be buried underneath other peoples unwanted scraps.
Today though he has come through, and deserves a GOLD STAR! He has bought home 10x 2m planks (plus brackets) for shelving. He says he's going to shelve the loft for me so we can store more bulky, less used items eg, cat litter, soap powder, pasta etc. The store cupboard he kitted out for me was filled when the 3kg bags of pasta at te$co were reduced to £2 last month.
Most of the time i think he just amuses me, but today he has done this of his own accord. He still doesnt think we need to store water, but did agree to getting a water butt when we find one at a suitable price.0 -

From what your have said you also have the common sense and drive to work for a future if necessity forces you to. Unfortunately GF stuff was never available here, much less on the health scheme. The only thing I found was a loaf the size and weight of a wall brick and just as edible...you had to order it at the chemist and it was 6.50 euros:eek:
In the last year more gluten free stuff has appeared in the supermarkets but nothing like you can get in the UK. I just buy the flour and make my own goodies, but only eat them now and again. A one kg bag of gluten free flour lasts me over a month. I get Italian gluten free pasta here and its lovely, but of course costs a lot more than normal pasta, but it is nicer and even freezes once cooked.
I was a member of the online celiac sites but the celiac Uk deny that you can react to touching gluten...and I KNOW that I react to touching it. I have to avoid hairspray and shampoo with gluten in it as I react badly to them. Ironically it tends to be the more expensive stuff that has a lot of gluten in it, including make up.
Yes, playdough is full of gluten and of course it smells nice, so children tend to smell it and put it near to their faces, bringing on a reaction. Crisps contain it now and they are starting to put it into a lot of chocolate bars...some instant coffee has it and they use it to keep some grated cheese and slices of ham separated....its endless!“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. I'm just wondering if those who have to be careful with food allergies may find the following book useful:
Month by month organic gardening, by Lawrence Hills

.
That's my favourite gardening book and the one I work by - its a great read too. We have serious allergies to dairy/eggs so have to be careful too.
2T folks often ask my son if he feels awful not being able to eat the same as everyone else - he always replies that he would feel more awful if he did!
edited to add fantastic attitude Craigyw - what an exciting time for you! wishing you the very best of luck, although with preps like that you're sure to be fine0 -

Yes, thanks, I saw it on the news the other day. Not sure if it was on this thread or another one, but I pointed out it is expired food ie beyond the use by date by up to three months! They say its to help the people who have little money for food but in that case I think they should donate it to the charities who are feeding them.
I personally will not be buying it . I had food poisoning so bad a few years ago I almost died. Food here does not have a best by date but only an expiry date for use. In the past it was destroyed after the use by date had gone.“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. I have just seen this game on facebook.
The item on your immediate right is the only item you can use as a weapon in a zombie apocalypse.....what is it?
In my case it's a leopard print cushion...guess I am going to have to hold them down and smother them with it lol
Is anyone else going to play?“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin.” Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC):A0
