    Davidsdesire Hi:hello:

Maine is where Amy Dacyzysyn (she of Tightwad Gazette fame) lives, isn't it? She certainly managed to grow a fair bit despite the weather but I seem to remember her coming to the conclusion that chickens wouldn't be cost effective because of having to heat the barn. Presumably the same applied to other animals.
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!
  • I have visited a couple of times and my daughter is on an extended visit to London right now.

Why is it everyone visits London?

There's far more to the UK, than just London.

True but you need to get yourself listed as a National Treasure for them to come and see you.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.
  • It all seems very small & close-together to Americans, and they often only allow themselves an afternoon, say, to visit us down here in Dorset, because you can go from Oklahoma to Fort Worth (200-odd miles) & back in a day, & see all there is to see, so half a day to come just 95 miles seems plenty! Needless to say, though, our roads don't run straight, our railways are completely baffling, and everything takes much longer than they think it's going to, and there's so much to see they go into overload. A number of our visitors have never seen the sea, except on TV or from an aeroplane, never mind a medieval church or a thatched cottage.

why, doesn't everyone go to London to have tea with the queen??

in my dd's case, it has a great deal to do with a tall, dark, handsome boy of Londonish persuasion. And at the age of 26, she's hardly ready to appreciate the charms of a smaller town.

Me? London is very nice and I'd like to go back but I prefer the rural countryside of Ireland. Or Scotland. I don't generally like big cities.

Don't forget that the "inefficiency quotient" tends to add time to how long it takes to do many things in this country:rotfl:. That's my take on things...from the number of times I estimate something will take x hours to do, but then somebody loses something/somebody has run out of something they could have foreseen/etc - so even stop-offs for refreshments can take longer than anticipated. Britain isn't a very efficient country....but there are many much worse I know...

But...I've only been emailing an American penpal this morning explaining I'm going back to Home Area for a visit soon and having to explain to her how arduous it will be/how long it will take because of being the other side of the country, as she will be used to thinking in terms of the vast expanses of land in America.

I could only ever live up here or in the west of Ireland. anywhere else is stress on wheels for me. And yes, my friend in Phoenix seems to think Scotland is the size of a hen run. :rotfl:
  • i sooo wanted to retire to Ireland but that didn't happen. I don't think I could drive there!

I LOVE the size of Scotland...one day's drive and you've pretty much gone from end to end. Not like the week that it takes here in the States.

I hope to be able to roam the countryside of England someday. It's on the list. :)

:) You could do a self-organised tea shop tour, driving around on the smaller roads between market towns and villages, stopping whenever you see a likely looking tea shoppe and having scones. Ducks. Village greens. Country pubs. It's all here.

I detest Lunnon Town, Mum's distaff line have been east enders since the early nineteenth century when they went there from the West Country in pursuit of work. I like the more relaxed pace of my little city.

:p Well, I should say, the chemically-induced relaxed pace, as there are no end of people smoking weed out on the streets in broad daylight, in the middle of the day. What do they think this is, Denver Colorado?

ETA; Suzy, were you ever to be wandering on foot in this Septic Isle and see one of the very commonplace signs saying Trespassers Will Be Prosecuted, relax - it's one of what lawyers call the 'wooden lies'. You can't be prosecuted for trespass, it's a civil not a criminal offense, you can only be sued, and that'd only succeed if they could prove you'd damaged stuff whilst trespassing.

A very pedantic type one put up a sign saying Trespassers will be Sued but will wish they had been Prosecuted on his land.

But, should you ever see this sign on a gate Entry Free, but the Bull will Charge Later, do be very careful.

we did exactly that in Ireland and Scotland. It was lovely. We'd like to do it again.

Ask me if you should never pull a very long, very sharp thorn from the side of your tire whilst touring the ruins in Kantuk...come on, aske me. LOL. Only after you've called the local garage to come fix your tire.

My husband's wife did that. :P
