Disconnection with nature in general leads to this fear of 'must not touch' which is a shame. I can't remember the last time I saw a kid climb a tree or get dirty playing in a bit of mud. Also, the compensation culture springs up if there are any mishaps. On the subject of nature - weather.... We have around 2 inch of snow settled here and I have seen stiletto type heels and flat summer slip on shoes being worn, why? (unless its the only shoes they have) and people so glued to their phones that they end up almost on their a**e.
  • Not all children are losing touch with nature!

Mine were out in the mud/snow today and love to grow their own food in our garden and forage for food in the forest/on the hills.

Just as I did with my parents, if we are missing a generation then we need to pick it up as these skills are too important to loose ( together with many other skills which would traditionally be passed on).

And very much freaked out by the micro chipping story! Very pleased I work for a small firm owned by a friend who is likely as freaked out as I am!

    What a superb aphorism!!!!
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

greenbee, I don't trust the beggars at all. I bumble around my little life and if people think I am someone of no consequence, they would be perfectly correct. If they think I'm a fool, they would be very badly mistaken. If they think of me rarely or never, then I have achieved my goal.:rotfl:
    Sensible approach to take :)

They could make use of smart phones and put bar codes on that. So that you flash the screen across the barcode reader. That would be unique to individuals and not trackable outside the office. Plus the user generally looks after their phones so will have it as they enter, plus one less thing to carry. Once the employee leaves the company they can block the bar code making it useless and so even if someone attempts to enter they will get refused.

That's pretty much how mobile boarding passes work for flights.

There's a lot of technology in this space. So why go for something so simple? If I told you that informally we rate technologies for 'creepiness factor' then you'll probably understand the way things are heading.

Companies aren't looking for the simplest or least intrusive option.

But they also have their reasons.
  • Hi all,

There is a programme starting soon ( cant find out when) on channel 5 I think its called 10'000 BC, its a programme where x amount of people live the life of people back in time, living in caves foraging, etc... might well be worth watching, so we can either pick tips up, or see some pitfalls, and come up with some solutions, I know they are not going to have modern day equipment etc, but as I say there might be some useful survival tips.. so if anyone finds out when its starts can you let me know lol..
I see the news last night, and they said 2 Russian plans flew over near Ireland and Britain, just outside our 25 mile zone, by all accounts this isn't the first time over recent time.. now this is what the government/ news are telling us, wonder what this is all about, and what is REALLY going on with the amount of times, and what is exactly flying near us?? anyone heard anything else??
Work to live= not live to work

That is an option that sounds as if it might work. The employer would have to supply the smartphone for that though and any necessary training in using it.

My own phone would be kept for my use only and is a very basic one indeed (ie I can make and receive phonecalls and texts only) and I wouldn't even know how to operate a smartphone if I had one and I expect there's a fair number like me and, hence, the employer would have to supply one (and the training) to those employees who don't have one.

So, to those of us who don't have smartphones anyway, then the "one less thing to carry" wouldn't apply, as we would be carrying the company smartphone, as well as our own personal mobile phone, but the general idea could work.

Could we have a bit of "fleshing out" of those "bones" there? What sort of options are companies looking into? and what are their reasons for NOT going for simplest/least intrusive option?

(feels even more pleased I am retired now personally).

    Just de-lurking to mention ....
I've just heard on the BBC news that a company in Stockholm is 'micro-chipping' its employees so that they can do away with card swiping or code-entering. The micro-chipped employee can do everything from gain entrance to the main building, their office and the photocopier plus buy their lunch in the canteen simply by holding their hand against the reader.
This makes me feel very uncomfortable - what do you think?

    Dreadful idea.

i think it said that they could choose not to have a chip - but then what happens when they want to use the copier, buy lunch, etc? If all these things can still all be done manually surely there's no point to the chip anyway!

    Just horrible. :(
  • Oh dear what days we live in. Did anyone see the programme last night on BBC 2 called The Super- Rich and us? it was very interesting indeed. It was on at 11.50 pm and I don't usually stay up late but it was fascinating, and also made me so cross!!!!! Snow is melting here and some sun out now so hopefully that is the end of it :) I can't moan about the weather as I have seen many pics and we really have had it easy here.
Do a little kindness every day.;)

Since most new phones are smart phones it would happen over time anyway. Though it does not need to be a smart phone. As long as you can display a photo that would be all that is needed. It could also be printed out as a QR code and you could put it in a wallet or on a sticky label and attach that to the back of something else that you carry every day like a buss pass holder.

Without unions to stop this I would imagine that bad employers would try bad ideas like microchipping as much as possible.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.
